Phillip’s first calms nervous Islanders!
For the first 45 minutes, whilst not exactly one way traffic, the Lucien Stars caused such havoc with the Islanders usually calm approach that Coach “Left” had no choice but to make changes, bringing on Avondale Williams to shore up the midfield.
Despite the substitution and a change of tactics the Lucien’s still managed to hit the post three times.
Reaching the break still level was a relief to the Islanders and their Coach. “We had a lack of pressure in the midfield, we changed to a 3-5-2 formation and thankfully it worked.”
In the second half, the Islanders had an early scare, but then began to slow the game down probing for gaps behind the Stars defense and using the pace of Henroy Mitchell to create chances up front.
Williams played a roaming role combining defense with support for the attackers and it was from his cross that the Islanders scored the opening goal.
A corner was half cleared and Ray Phillip, unmarked in the penalty box, headed home for his first goal of the campaign.
“It felt sweet, I’ve been training hard over the past few days and I finally scored the goal I have been working for,” commented Phillip.
Williams made sure of all three points with a curling free kick from 20 yards out.
In other games, the Panthers continued to improve with a hard fought three points against Old Madrid. Shannon Lawrence pouncing on a mistake in the Madrid defense to score the game’s only goal.
“A good feeling,” he said. “When they mess up you just have to clean up.”
Coach Mark Hall was pleased with the performance. A game of two half’s” he commented. “We are pleased with the win and can now plan to move up the table during the second half of the season.”
Will Pridgeon had a hat trick in leading the Wolues to a 6-1 triumph over the Haitian Stars. Boed Van Koeg’s score (18) was sandwiched between two first half goals from Pridgeon, who then completed his hat trick from the penalty spot in the second half.
Tom Bridgewater burst through the defense to score and James Shearman rounded out Wolues’ scoring in added time at the end.
Haitian Stars’ James St. Amie scored a consolation goal, but the Wolues continue their fine run and remain a serious threat to the Islanders atop the standings.
The Sugar Boys were leading VG United 3-0 in the “derby” when the lights went out on Virgin Gorda. No further play was possible and the match will be replayed in its entirety on Sunday in Virgin Gorda. The Lucian Stars and One Love match was also affected and has been rescheduled for Saturday’s first match on Tortola.
