LONG BAY, Beef Island, VI- Veteran fisherman Phillip Smith Robin added yet another fisherman’s tournament title to his bulging collection, when the Obel Penn Fisherman’s Tournament was held as part of the observances of Virgin Islands Day on Monday, July 3, 2023.

Mr Smith Robin weighed in his catch at 115.10 lbs.

He claimed the trophy for Heaviest Overall Catch" and a cheque for $1000.00.

The 2nd place prize went to Mr Wilbert A. Penn, who weighed in a catch of 20.9 lbs.

Mr Penn pocketed $500.00.

Gov’t ‘committed to moving forward fisheries’- Dr the Hon Karl Dawson

Junior Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries Dr the Hon Karl Dawson (R1) noted that he was pleased with the outcome of the tournament, although he did not expect a high turnout due to it being planned in a short space of time and fishermen needed time to prepare.

“But we are committed, the government, to show our interest in moving forward fisheries, so we thought it was important that we at least hold the fishermen’s tournament this year.

“We were happy to hold it in honour of Mr Obel Penn, a fisherman from the East End,” Dr the Hon Dawson told Virgin Islands News Online.

As another indication of the government’s commitment to fisheries, Dr Dawson said, along with other activities, there will be an exchange with fishermen from the VI to Barbados in the next two weeks.

“We certainly want to signal to the fishermen that we are serious about fishing and this government is intentional about moving forward the fishing sector during this term,” Dr Dawson remarked.

It should have been named after Mr: Herman Thomas, no one on the eastern part of the island did more for fishing and providing fresh fish not just for East End, Long Look and the surrounding communities but also extending to Road Town and surrounding communities. I have never known Mr: Penn being engaged in fishing.

What does it tell you about the viability of a fishing industry in the Territory when the winner, an experienced fisherman caught 100 pounds of fish and 2nd place caught only 20?
