Residents want resolution to water woes - Petition
“It’s important that Virgin Gorda has a consistent supply of water. The business stakeholders and residents of Virgin Gorda in an effort to express our desire for a resolution of our water woes present to you the attached signatures which request an audience to discuss and come up with solutions for the challenges we continue to face on Virgin Gorda,” the petition noted.
Up to publication time, some 122 signatures were already assigned to the petition out of a goal of 200.
The petition’s organizers shared that there is the hope that the signatures would accurately express the urgency in which they are requesting attention, “We understand that the road to success during these times is a long and difficult journey. However, we believe that government has a responsibility to be honest with its citizens and residents.:
Meanwhile, the petition detailed that access to water and sanitation are recognized by the United Nations as human rights. It also focused on bringing availability; accessibility; affordability; quality; safety and acceptability of the water suppy as paramount to its delivery.
Water levels low & being rationed - Petition
The petition detailed that the situation has reached emergency stages in the last two weeks where on a regular basis, residents are told that the reservoir levels are low hence water supply has to be rationed.
“Up to a few weeks ago, water was rationed with no water pumped in Spanish Town at night from 9 pm to 5 am. Of late water is not pumped from 12 noon to 4 pm and then again from 9 pm to 5 am. We are very concerned that September is one of the periods of lowest water demand due to off-peak tourism season and yet there appears to be low water levels. The lack of water creates unhygienic situations that concern our community especially now that schools are back in session. We are seeing an increase in COVID cases worldwide with BVI not being an exception.”
The petition’s organizers said they look forward to dialogue with all concerned members of the House of Assembly, Aqua Designs Lead Management Team both for Virgin Gorda and the region, the Acting Director Water and Sewerage along with the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Communications and Works; and the Permanent Secretary Natural Resources.
