Persons starting to think VI environment a contributor to cancer– Cromwell Smith
The Rotary Club of Tortola is hosting Grand Affair 'Havana Night' on March 23, 2023, with proceeds going towards funding and improving cancer prevention and treatment as well as expansion of the local Youth Empowerment Programme (YEP).
Mr Smith was at the time having a discussion with Rotary Club of Tortola’s Lorna G. Smith on the fundraiser and the need for more research and funding for cancer treatment and prevention in the VI.
“Over the last several months, we've had a lot of [cancer] passings and we continue over the years actually and it seems to be like, let me just say persons are beginning to think that we have an environmental problem that's contributing to the development of cancer," Mr Smith stated on his show Umoja on ZBVI 780AM on January 16, 2023.
He said the proliferation of death by cancer in the Virgin Islands is now at a rate that warrants investigation, as well as the need to focus on cancer prevention.
Need for investigative funding
“We need investigations funding to look at the environment to see where in the environment and what [in the] environment is causing the increase in cancer patients,” he added.
According to Mrs Smith, data is needed to do much to improve services in the VI, “As far as possible we should know whether there is evidence of this... what our suspicions are” she said as it relates to environmental contributors to cancer in the VI.
Mr Smith said, overall, the funding in the VI must be able to contribute to an assessment of environmental issues as well as the prevention of cancers, along with treatment of the disease.

Open burning at Pockwood Pond,
Bad diet, you are what you eat.
Alcohol galore. When I go in some restaurants I want to gag at the sight of all the grease and smell of oil. As early as 7 am you have people in the supermarket buying a beer or guineas! We got to do better when it comes to health. More education is definitely needed. How about a show that demonstrates how to cook healthy dishes. The college can start something. We need a local channel to educate the public otherwise we are going to overwhelm our health care system and have more deaths from chronic diseases.
eaten, and continuing. Many know and unknown to us chemicals are present in those food items.
In addition to the above we import 100% of variouse chemecals that exposed us daily to to possible cancerious effects.
The wind blows throughout the earth from country to country, so do people daily. Cancerous chemicals are present in the air that we breathe, and also many industrial items we are using daily
To make a long comment short, you are nit a qualified medical expert on this topic issue. I would am now suggesting to you to zip up you mouth. Your thoughts, and words on this issue are mere speculations viod of medical evidences. Talk more of what you know of, rather than what you and others can't prove at this time on this deadly decease, cancer.
That’s great news. It’s going to be so good now to only have to worry about the entire planet’s population dying from only three causes. No wars, road accidents, AIDS, dementia, natural causes, drowning, poisoning, murder, suicide. Need I continue?
FIX THE DUMP
..
Raw sewage dumped in the ocean and streets
Poisonous chemicals used and leaching from the boat yards.
Just a couple of no brainers for the suits to ponder but nothing but nothing will be done.
