ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Radio talk show host Edmund G. Maduro said that some people in the Virgin Islands are resorting to swapping lands they own to meet the exorbitant cost of medical care.

He made this point while speaking on his EGM radio show on December 18, 2014. The show was aired on ZROD 103.7 FM and it was his last show for 2014.

In response to concerns raised by a guest who called into the show Maduro said that the cost of healthcare is so steep now that persons are being indebted to doctors and lawyers and to clear these debts they are turning to their land.

“You know what someone has said to me as a threat to these British Virgin Islands? [They said] citizens of the BVI who have some kind of land, that if they don’t be careful, because of the commercializing of medical care, the doctors and the lawyers are going to end up with every scrap of land the people own,” he said.

At this point the caller sought clarification from Maduro, asking, “Are you saying that if I get sick and I can’t pay, that I could swap $100,000 worth of land for medicine till I die…is that where we’re coming to?”

“That’s where we’re coming to…that’s where we are already,” responded Maduro. “You better stay healthy and get over 65,” he said.

He said that before the proposed increases at the hospital are put in place there should be a list of all the new fees put out in the public domain. “While this list has already been prepared by the hospital board it has not been made public. It is a serious matter and I want to say to you my good people that we cannot, should not and must not take these things lightly,” he said.

“It is a grave situation. We are going to be in a lot of serious trouble, particularly with mothers who have their young children,” he said.

Mr. Maduro is not giving the people facts and is creating panic in people for what reasons I do not know. I do not know about people having to swap land for medical care and I find it hard to believe. There are always option. Many persons have sought and continue to seek help from the Government for health care, so why would they have to give up their land to get care. We the people need to start looking at how we treat our bodies by eating better and exercising more then we would seldom need the doctors. For instance, even if you are poor, buy lots of vegetables and fruits - okra, cabbage, carrots, lettuce, broccoli, sweet potatoes (good starch), green banana, peas and lentils (good proteins), apples, pears etc.

If any such thing happened, I believe that would be an isolated case.

gnorance is the most expensive of all...more expensive than green banana, okra, sweet potato, beans etc, which with minimum effort and little or no cost and even at a profit.

You get a new car you pay for it. You get medical care you pay for it.

Health care is a business and each individual need to make personal healthcare their own business.
If someone sells you their healthcare then you must pay the price for it. It is buying goods.
if u don't pay for it then the health care workers will have to sell their land to survive. So it''s you or them.
Work at staying healthy. The physical appearance of the majority of the people children and adults indicates that their personal health care is a low priority and when you make yourself sick then you want free,,,Free your minds and get healthy!!!!! or stay poor. Obesity, diabetis, high blood pressure, most cancers are preventable.
You happy to pay McDonald for poison but want free doctoring. Plenty money, discipline and self control goes into someone becoming a doc and they deserve every dime to medicate your self indulgent cause and effect dis-ease of mind spirit and body so give them your land or leave them outta what should be your businnes--personal health care and prevention.

The good news is ,, after they have paid with all their land, then they will not have to pay for their health care.
the not so good news is that after all that, the chances are that they will still be sick.

Edmund should tell them to do what he does....Stay healthy!

As costly as people may think Health Care is here in the BVI, go next door (St. Thomas) check out there prices for visitors and locals not to mention surgeries and Ambulance services. The only thing that is a cheaper where health is concerned is the MRI bec Eureka is charging double.
