Pap Test Screening Initiative successfully targets over 300 women

A Pap test is a procedure used to collect cells from the cervix (lower part of the uterus) so they can be looked at closely in a lab under a microscope. The Human papillomavirus (HPV) is one of the leading causes of cervical cancer. Photo: Internet Source/File

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Over 300 women signed up to participate in the Celebrating Life: Know>Fix>Live>WIN! free pap smear initiative titled CERVICAL CANCER, THAT’S ENOUGH.

The primary objective of the campaign, which was financially supported through a partnership with Unite BVI, was to promote cervical cancer awareness, prevention, and early detection. It was also an opportunity to assist women with ruling out the threats of any abnormal conditions they may be experiencing to address matters early.

Inspired by Mrs British Virgin Islands 2022/2023 Dr Arliene T. Penn’s personal experience as a cervical cancer survivor, the campaign sought to encourage women to prioritise their health and undergo regular screenings.

The ultimate goal

The ultimate goal was to reduce the incidence of cervical cancer-related deaths in the community and to bring much-needed awareness to women’s health and the importance of prevention of disease through early detection.

“I thank God for preserving my life so that I can be a living testimony of His goodness. Now, I am using my experience to spread the ‘Good News’ that we do not have to die prematurely from what can be prevented or treated,” said Dr Penn who is also an Ordained Minister.

“I truly appreciate that women are coming forward and they continue to take advantage of this opportunity to KNOW what is happening to their bodies so they can FIX what is happening to LIVE a beautiful, fearless, wonderful, thriving quality of life where we all WIN!,” Dr Penn said.

This initiative was supported through the collaborative effort of medical facilities, namely B&F Medical Complex, Eureka Medical Center, PicSmith Medical Center, and the Wellness Center Clinics who all provided free consultation with the scheduled visits.

The Human papillomavirus (HPV) is one of the leading causes of cervical cancer. WINBVI thanks the BVI Health Services Authority for doing its part to educate the public, both men and women, about its dangers and doing their part by making the vaccines that prevent HPV available for males and females.

I was born in the 60's and these things wasn't in place. No one did these test and was good. Everything is run to the doctor. My mother didn't go to the doctor than and she still doesn't up to this day and she's 97 years old. No COVID vaccine and she still does her garden, drives, swim, walk, run, play, etc. she's very smart to know not to trust the government. She said if they said go left than I must go right. I agree. When you start to do test you will end up with a sickness. Why do test to see if you have something? I am sure when you get it the test kits that you took can't come back and tell you that you have the sickness so what's the point. The point is the doctors make more money the more you go to see them . You built the hospital and you still have to pay to be seen. Wow. I can't figure out you all,You don't ask any questions at ALL. I am amazed. My grandkids ask me so much questions

Every year all individual should have a wellness check, Female GYN and Annual Check/Physical, if sexual active make sure to include all STD especially Clamydia and base on age a yearly mammogram, and also colonoscopy. Male same yearly Physical and STD Check also please check for Clamydia as you male going around not knowing you have it until it's late and you want to know why you can't have kids, Also check your Colon for prostate. A fit kit test can be done at home and take to the lab to be tested for both make and female this should be done yearly. These Nurse have to learn to do wellness check, the system should be designed to remind patient that there yearly physical/Annual is due. Get ahead of your health.
