Over 500 back-to-school items given away by Hon Wheatley
Over 500 back-to-school items to be distributed
The event currently underway at the Jeffery A. Caines Sports Complex will see the distribution of over five hundred books, bags, pencils, rulers, and other school items for children on Virgin Gorda and by extension District 9.
Currently over four hundred students are present to collect their back-to-school items. Parents will also walk away with food vouchers to be used at any Virgin Gorda supermarket when buying food.
In addition, vouchers for textbooks, uniforms, hair washing and hair cuts will also be distributed.
A cultural exhibition by the Department of Culture is on hand at the venue as well as child friendly activities such as the bouncy ride.
Hon Wheatley told Virgin Islands News Online (VINO) that he is proud to collaborate with so many sponsors to continue to give back.
He also revealed that back-to-school packages have been reserved for Seventh Day Adventist residents from District 9, who for religious reasons could not attend today's event.
The 9th District back to school event remains the biggest and the longest running back to school event in the Virgin Islands. Other districts are also planning their back-to-school events.
VINO will bring more details of the day’s event as they develop.
