ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Over three hundred men have been screened so far at the BVI Red Cross’ Biennial Men’s Health Fair.

Executive Director of the BVI Red Cross Mrs Stacy C. Abraham told Virgin Islands News Online (VINO) last evening, Friday, February 7, 2025, that 77 men were screened in Virgin Gorda during the health fair held there on February 1, 2025, at the Virgin Gorda Catholic Community Centre.

230 men screened on Day 1 in Tortola

On day one of the men’s health fair on Tortola, February 7, 2025, at the Multipurpose Sports Complex, 230 men were screened.

“We did see the rush in the morning because most of the men they wanted to do it and go to work, and then there was rain…so that kind of slowed down the island, you know persons coming in,” Mrs Abraham told our news centre.

She said she is happy with the turn out, “I think 230 is a good number for a Friday, a working day…The turnout, in my opinion, was good.”

Volunteer Urologist Dr Mc Williams from Oklahoma, USA an dDr Franklin from the USVI along with local Dr Elson Vanterpool were the doctors on site Friday.

“Thank you for the services you are offering to the male population of the BVI. Words are not enough to repay you,” one man who came to get screened on Friday said.

“I love it, I love it,” one woman who appeared to be there with her husband said, adding, “If we were supposed to go to the doctor, we [have] to pay $250, $300 for these tests.”

Governor Pruce gets checked

Governor Daniel Pruce also supported the efforts of the BVI Red Cross and their partners by visiting the health fair on Friday. He and his close protection officer, joined the line and did all the screenings.

In a Facebook post ahead of the health fair, Governor Pruce encouraged men of the Virgin Islands to go get screened.

“It’s a great opportunity for men over 40 to get free health screening. As we know early detection can really help with many conditions inluding prostate cancer,” he said in the post.

Health fair continues today

The men’s health fair on Tortola continues today, Saturday, February 8, 2025, at the Multipurpose Sports Complex.

Mrs Abraham said the team anticipates a bigger crowd today because “it’s Saturday and people aren’t working”.

In addition to the doctors who were part of the team on Friday, Dr Denely Fraser joins the team of volunteer doctors at the health fair today.

Meantime, Mrs Abraham revealed that the 8 HIV tests conducted on Virgin Gorda were all negative. PSA tests conducted on Virgin Gorda are also ready for collection.

“The men just need to come to the office with their IDs,” Mrs Abraham explained.

Test results from the Tortola leg of the health fair will be available next week.
