Over 200 volunteers show up for International Coastal Cleanup
Organised by Green BVI, the cleanup saw 268 people come together across the VI at Trellis Bay, Savannah Bay, and on Anegada and Jost van Dyke to clean the coastlines, taking action against marine litter.
The coastal cleanup was supported by Beyond The Reef, Prevention of Marine Litter in the Caribbean Sea, BVI Red Cross, Veolia, Royal Virgin Islands Police Force, Rotary Club of Tortola, Rotary Club of Central Tortola, Sister Islands Programme, Overseas Filipino Workers BVI Organisation, CCT, Filipino Association of the British Virgin Islands, Lions Club of Tortola, Valley Sound Lions, RISA BVI, Claudia Creque Educational Centre, Miss BVI, Amiah’s Lemonade Stand and Stellar volunteers: Lucia, Jonathan, Sue, Avit, Aruna, and their mum.
What collective action looks like
Green BVI gave a “huge thank you” to the hundreds of volunteers who supported the initiative.
“This is what collective action looks like. Our ocean is the heartbeat of the Virgin Islands, and today, you SHOWED UP for it!” Green BVI posted to their Facebook Page.
The post added, “Together, we are creating a greener, cleaner and healthier VI through turning the tide on marine litter.”
Millions volunteered worldwide
International Coastal Cleanup is coordinated globally by the Ocean Conservancy.
Since 1986, it has been the world’s largest single-day volunteer effort for ocean health. This year, millions of volunteers across over 100 countries participated in the event.
