WHITE BAY, Jost van Dyke, VI- There has been outrage on social media after it was alleged a tourist and his boat captain were noticed catching baby turtles at White Bay in Jost van Dyke on Sunday, July 28, 2024.

“Went to White Bay JVD yesterday and observed a tourist catching one of the baby turtles that’s always in the area feeding. We shouted at them to tell them release it and shockingly, the captain (local captain) operating his sailing vessel shunned us away,” Facebook user Alex Fahie posted on The Real BVI Community Board on July 29, 2024.

Fahie alleged that the guests proceeded to the back of their sailing vessel “out of our view and what looked like they tossed the turtle in the back of a dinghy.”

He said other guests from another boat shouted at them to release the turtle but the tourist that caught it said he already did “which was a lie as we can see there was another guy in the same dinghy taking pictures of it”.

Fahie further said he observed the captain pointing out another turtle to the guests as if he was telling him to catch that one also.

“We watched the tourist put his mask back on and hopped in the water to catch the other one. At this point we were all watching him which made him pause as the turtle he was after was right in front of him. The captain needs to be fined heavily!” Fahie stated.

Outrage

Many on social media condemned the alleged actions, with some pointing out that it is illegal to handle the turtles even if it’s just for taking pictures.

One person said the Fisheries Department and Marine Police were notified of the incident.

There was also some dispute about the name of the vessel and who the boat, a catamaran, belonged to.

Our news site will not mention the name of the vessel alleged, as we cannot confirm the information.

Make them pay a hefty fine. How stupid can they be? Very stupid indeed. They saw they were babies so why scare them? Some people feel they can do anything they want, just to have fun.

The first inhabitants of these islands had a culture of cannibalism, it was abolished, human sacrifice was a cultural thing to many , it was abolished. Taking marine life in season legally is fine , it is for a reason it is limited as to keep the numbers up and so fishermen can’t still make a living for generations to come

The old saying says when in Rome do as Romans do, ie, respect the laws, culture, etc. Visitors coming into a country should abide by the laws of the host country. It is bad enough for visitors to ignore, violate the laws of country, but it is even worst when violation is encouraged by locals for personal gain or out of ignorance. The survival rate of turtles is extremely low due to natural predators, etc ; certain types of turtles are a threatened, and requires protection from extinction., The human predators who deliberately, wantonly,,violate VI laws must be given due process and their day in court. Some visitors think because tourism is an important mode of foreign exchange earnings that they can do as they like. Hell no. Disinvite such people. The VI is a great place to visit, not just for the beaches, but also for the attractions, culture l, history, culture and the people.

This is a poor example. Even our elected representatives don't respect the laws here. Doing as the romans do in the BVI is to break as many laws as you feel like while not giving a damn.

Completely agree that the law should be enforced, but this is a poor example.

Responsible fishers dont catch baby fish or turtle, or baby anything.

Stop comparing a grown caught animal in season to a baby which has not been able to reproduce.

CNN: 90% of Ocean's Fishery Depleted

CNN recently reported that It is thought that 90% of the planet's fish stocks have already been used up.

But what would the seas look like if we did decide to permanently stop fishing?

Asking this simple question can provide a surprising insight into the profound impact we are currently having on the planet's largest ecosystem and reveals to us questions of what we can do to help the ocean fishery to recover.

A Proper 30 & 40 Year Urban Planning Development Plan is Needed for all Three of our Islands

Urbanization is often linked with economics, increased job opportunities and a centralized market, better pay and higher individual wealth are usually all of the reasons that people are drawn into cities; and for a long time, these pull factors are what caused cities to grow.

However, giving the current and past uncertain economic climate over the last 20 years, coupled with mass migration where people living in cramped depressed economic conditions are constantly moving in search of better opportunities to provide comfortably and feasable housing accomodations, transpertaion, food and utilities, we find a need for a Proper 30 & 40 Year Urbanized Planning

Hence, a proper structured Infrustrual Urban Planning and Development Process is necessary and a priority is both imperitive and necessary for an equilibrium or a balance for the following classes to be reached in order to provide such solutions for a smooth infrustructual development and growth if we wish to have better conditions for the
