ROAD TOWN, Tortola- Orrett Donald Kennedy from the St. George’s School has topped the 2024 Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations in the Virgin Islands (VI) with 9 Grade Ones out of eleven subjects written.

The Ministry for Education released the results for the VI on Friday, September 27, 2024, in a press release.

Jaydeen Britany Martin also from the St. George’s School sat ten subjects at this year’s CSEC examinations attaining seven Grade Ones while Gorcia Iona Johnson from the Claudia Creque Educational Centre wrote nine subjects and obtained seven Grade Ones.

The top students are ranked based on the total number of Grade One passes attained for the sitting.

“Senior secondary students, the Ministry congratulates each of you for your success on the examinations,” the release stated.

100% pass rate in 11 out of 35 subjects

The CSEC exmainations are administed by the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC). 

This year, students from the VI sat a total of 35 subjects and of those a 100% pass rate was achieved in eleven. It was achieved in Agricultural Science SA General, Economics General, English B General, French General, Office Administration General, Visual Arts General, Physical Education & Sport General, Food, Nutrition and Health Technical, Family and Resource Management Technical, and Industrial Technology Electrical Industrial Technology Mechanical.

A 90 to 99% pass rate was achieved in English A General, Information Technology General, Physics General, Principles of Business General, Electronic Document Preparation and Management General, Human and Social Biology General, and Technical Drawing Technical.

“The overall average pass rate for students across all subjects was an impressive 85.3%, underscoring the strong performance of our students on the whole,” the Education Ministry said in the press release.

An 80 to 89% pass rate was received in Biology General, Chemistry General, Integrated Science General, Principles of Accounts General, and Textiles, Clothing and Fashion Technical.

Continued improvement in English A while improved needed in Mathematics

The Ministry for Education has noted that students continue to improve in the English A exams. A total of 222 students sat the English A examination achieving a 95.5% pass rate, a 3% increase from 2023. Among these students, 104 earned Grade One, 69 earned Grade Two, and 39 earned Grade Three passes.

Meanwhile, Mathematics remains a key area for targeted improvement, the release said. It highlighted that the VI recorded a 46.45% pass rate in Mathematics, which is still above the regional average of 36%.

“The Ministry of Education is already engaged in efforts to address the teaching and learning of Mathematics from the foundation levels. This includes targeted professional development for teachers, increasing classroom resources, and the introduction of a Certificate in Mathematics Instruction for primary teachers in 2025,” it added.

The Ministry for Education said it is committed to strengthening Mathematics education and improving outcomes in the years ahead.

The students, teachers, and schools were also commended for their hard work and dedication in maintaining high academic standards.

“As we move forward, we will continue to focus on areas that require improvement while building on our successes to ensure the highest quality education for all students in the Virgin Islands,” the Ministry of Education said in the press release.

Students who will be writing the 2025 CSEC examinations were encouraged to begin preparations now as what they put in, they will undoubtedly get out.
