Orlando Bonnick behind bars for smuggling
Bonnick made his first appearance in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday February 6, 2015 having been taken into custody by officers of the Royal Virgin Islands’ Police Force (RVIPF).
In giving the court an account of what led to the man’s arrest prosecutor O'Neil Simpson said that it was on November 7, 2014 that Bonnick visited Lazarus Shipping establishment at Purcell Estate where there was a conversation with an female employee who he allegedly asked to sign her name to a package containing Capri Sun juices bound for St Vincent and the Grenadines which she refused to do.
When the women did not grant the wish the accused then allegedly asked the employee to send the package in the name of Michael Williams to a person whose name he gave as Suzanne Clarke of a St. Vincent address.
This was done with the understanding that Bonnick would have brought his identification documents the following day but he never returned with same.
The very day according to the prosecution, Police and Customs Officers conducted operations on a cargo vessel at Port Purcell and in a cereal box which was searched they found Capri Sun juices and crackers. Upon further examination of the juices it was observed that one of the boxes was allegedly tampered with and upon closer scrutiny a medium-size priority mail package was observed inside. The mail package was further inspected and, according to allegations, a Glock 19 handgun with an empty magazine was found inside.
Additionally there was a plastic bag with one Glock magazine containing 13 rounds of ammunition and a box containing 50 rounds of ammunition was also found. This led to the arrest of Bonnick.
Bonnick's attorney Ms Ruthilia Maximea told the court during her bail application that her client owns and manages his business A&O Jeep and Car Rental in Lower Estate, OB Plumbing and Construction, Teach Me driving school, as well as a landing and gutter cleaning company.
Senior Magistrate Richards denied bail and told Bonnick that he will be brought back to court on March 13, 2015.
