ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Seen to many as a toothless tiger, Opposition Leader Honourable Ronnie W. Skelton (AL) is set to flex his muscles in a menacing way at the Nineteenth Sitting of the First Session of the Fifth House of Assembly of the Virgin Islands, On September 3, 2024.

According to the Order Paper, the Leader of the Opposition is to bring a Motion of No Confidence against Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7).

Hon Skelton and the Opposition also wants the people to return to the polls to elect a new government.

The Opposition was left with a bitter taste in their mouths after they failed to unite to form a government following the elections of April 2023, despite having a 1-seat advantage.

‘Bleak economic outlook’- Hon Skelton

According to the motion to be brought by Hon Skelton, since the formation of the government in April 2023, the Premier and Minister for Finance has “governed in such a way that has led to a bleak economic outlook for the Territory, a rapidly declining quality of life for the people of the Virgin Islands and a lack of public confidence in his leadership and in his government.”

The motion lists a number of reasons the Opposition has lost confidence in Premier Wheatley, including the underestimation of the salary increases to public officials by approximately $20M, even though it was the Deputy Governor’s Office, through a consultancy firm, had come up with the underestimation.

Hon Skelton also said Premier and Minister of Finance has not to date produced an economic plan for the Territory after being asked repeatedly to do so by the Members of the Opposition.

The Opposition Leader claimed that the Territory continues to suffer from a lack of inward investment while other Caribbean nations and the United States Virgin Islands continue to attract major investments to add to their tourism product and increase their respective government’s financial resources.

Will the motion succeed?

Premier Wheatley is accused by the Opposition of squandering public resources on “matters that bring no financial returns” to the people of Virgin Islands including; his “non-stop party” following the inaugural flight of American Airlines from Miami to Beef Island; the “recently held failed” Virgin Islands Music Festival 2024; the constant international traveling by him and his colleagues compliments of the public’s purse “with no results to show”; and his proposed purchase of one (1) acre of land in Albion Estate in Sea Cow’s Bay, Tortola at an estimated cost of over $300,000 USD, “while our public clinics were disconnected from the electrical supply due to outstanding payments to BVI Electrical Corporation and other important initiatives remain unfunded or underfunded.”

The motion is not expected to succeed as even NDP Member and Deputy Premier Hon Lorna G. Smith, OBE (AL), who crossed the floor to help form the government, has publicly defended and declared her support for Premier Wheatley.

Even though the motion may not get enough support, it will give the Opposition a platform to ventilate their issues.

More details to follow.

Can you do better than the Premier. Can you handle the stress and pressure he is under. Anyone with clear eyes
can see, he loves his country and is carrying heavy burdens. Let him finish his term is peace for crying out loud.
Everyone wants to be Chief in Charge. It's who God anoints. Mr. Premier do your job, don't mind the haters.

There goes the wig one batting for VIP, have you observe his slaunt of the narrative to desensitize the public? He is conflating issues, if this no confidence is granted by the people who should even come out to protest for him to go, the people can feel they got justice even once in their lifetime, you know how much great a citizens you will feel like to see you halt stupidness in it's track? No stupid party are first class flights to go burst a lime any where in the world the white colonials are sitting at some table having idle chats, but tax payers pay dearly for Wheatley to join them in table parties, hope this comes through, our circumstances can change midway through this five years torturous forced marriage to VIP because of Lorna in her corner and not ours.

Now, why would you want to do this to young Wheatley, our Premier. First Walwyn and now you.
Have you ever heard of working together for the good of the country. Surely, as Virgin Islanders we can
do better than this. Real Virgin Islanders do not live like this. Just my opinion. The unreal ones are just
    greedy. Sigh.

Yes he won and his team members know he'll be the premier beforehand. They know just like all of us that he will be premier if vip win. So I don't know which kindergarten kids you trying to brainwash. We from district 7,9 4, 5&1 are happy voters. Next election you will see us again and some more district too.

try sit down you had the opportunity to form an administration to deal with the people’s business and did not have enough skills to do so

this good gentleman was associated with an administration that handed out your tax money and to this day our people have nothing to show for it

can the honourable opposition member form a government because London appears to have some form of confidence in the current leader because the United Kingdom Have the Authority to Remove Him and take over affairs

Hon Member might associate with members of the public who sweep the things under the rug but not all off of us.

Because all now there is no Aeroplane and almost 10 million handed out during the administration he was part of and he never spoke out on that subject matter

It is very sad, but the position we are now in Spiritual, economical, physical and productive lag far behind where we should now be.
If are satisfied with high rising crimes, running infrastructure, sewage problems, water problems, badly traffic roads, badly management of our finances, many without jobs, many that earn enough to make ends meet, dangerous illegal drugs trafficking, below normal education standards, many disorderly youth swaying in our traffic recklessly, unnecessary irresponsible loud noise being.made, no buyers for the Pink Houses in the hill side, unnecessary pleasure Fest, etc.,etc., then ignore the leader of the opposition call for a "No Confidence Motion against our current Premier, Dr. Natalio Sujande Wheatley,
Personally harbor no hate for him, but as how he leads the BVI political, I have no confidence in his leadership.

God is Love, and Love is God.

    The people will decide

Five of the six persons of the opposition were members of the government at one point or another, what did they do - what do they have to show for their term?? As Mr Opposition stated "Real Virgin Islanders" work together for the betterment of the people and territory as a whole not tear down each every opportunity they get.

If I should say you all be in for a rude awakening. A no confidence support bring new government, and it will be a shock for the person who call the no confidence to get vote out of the party. Be careful now. Work together for the good of the country or is that too much to ask. The mentality is sickening.

You the opposition look so foolish. You had a chance to form the government and you said wait until morning. Three party could not form the government because of egos. We will never forget the plane that didn’t fly. We will never forget the sewage money from East End and we will never forget the wall. The UK appears to have confidence in Wheatley and you want to bring motion. Let the man do his term. If the people wanted you them they would have voted for you. Motion will not succeed.

Under the Westminster system the governing party with collective responsibility, government can typically win any motion, bill, piece of legislation, etc on the floor..A one vote majority , though the majority, is living on a sharp knife’s edge, for anything can go south, ie, crossing of the floor, resignations, deaths, etc..It is an anxious time for any government; it should be , for politicians are about self-interest. It should be an ancious time for the VIP government. With a one vote majority, it is a ticking time bomb and a sitting government must demonstrate high performance, dotting the I and crossing all T. Governing entities don’t like crises, but when they occur on one’s watch one must grab the opportunity to deliver, for it is generally an upward swing. Did the VIP fumble the ball instead of running with it? It is as easy as ABC and 123 when things are going well. However,,leading and managing effectively during a crisis is the TRUE test of leadership.

It seems like election season in the BVI never ends. The Opposition is constantly in campaign mode. Trying to bring down the ruling party. This is very disappointing. What ever happened to preparing the BVIs for the future generations to come. A bunch of old people who has difficulty accepting that they are not in power. When you could have people in a government with pending court cases defending what they call truth is ludicrous. It’s like Satan correcting Sin. The majority of the people in the ruling government are young, instead of criticising everything that they are doing, if you are truly for the people you would help the people. The help that you can offer should not only be that you want to have power. Years ago when the NDP government was ruling the Poor man suffered, the rich got richer and that’s what power provides. Power provides opportunities. The opposition members are after Power. This same craze for Power caused them to not be the ruling government today. This type of behaviour has been evident among them. Today they are talking about vote of no confidence. Pot calling the kettle bottom black. Myron what ever happened to the ESHS wall? Does your eyes work? Can you see? Do you need your glasses cleaned. Where is our money? We still need accountability. Where is the plane that never flew? But you could be talking about vote of no confidence. We do not have confidence in you either. Find a way forward to work together putting country first and not ego and pockets. And help us to build our Confidence that there will be a future for our people. This right here about Vote of no Confidence makes no sense. We the people have no Confidence in the Opposition either……….,

This theatrics, a performance art, but poor performance by both government and opposition. Both are useless as tits on a boat hog. They need to go do the people’s work, ie,,srresting violent and property crimes, lowering the cost of living,,improving education, improving the delivery of healthcare, improving the physical infrastructure,,diversifying the economy,,working on proper budgeting, among other. things. I’m going back in the bush, drinking/sipping some bush tea watching the poor performance art.
