FISH BAY, Tortola, VI- Former legislator Mr Carvin Malone has blasted the Leader of the Opposition Honourable Ronnie W. Skelton (AL) for not honouring the invitation of Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) to join him at the Monday, January 8, 2024, Press Conference.

Mr Malone said that he feels there was no reason for Hon Skelton to back out of the press conference called by Premier Wheatley following the announcement by outgoing Governor John J. Rankin, CMG on January 5, 2024, to request additional powers to hasten the implementation of recommendations following a Commission of Inquiry.

This move was met with outright rejection by the entire House of Assembly, as stated by Premier Wheatley in an address to the territory shortly after the Governor’s announcement.

Opposition ‘felt it necessary’ to have own press conference

Instead, the Opposition held its own press conference on January 9, 2024, and its leader Hon Skelton sought to defend his position.

“We reiterate our position, our solidarity with the government and the people of the Virgin Islands against any additional powers being given to the governor. I think that would be both a retrograde and unnecessary step in the furtherance of governance and democracy.”

He added, “However, I need to make it abundantly clear that while we are in agreement on this core point, there are certain issues, discussions and agreements between the government of the Virgin Islands and the government of the UK of which the Opposition and the people of the Virgin Islands have not yet been made aware.”

Hon Skelton insisted that while the Opposition stands firmly with the government on objecting to additional powers for the Governor, he said: “We felt it necessary to hold our own press conference, which we hope will demonstrate our zero tolerance for any dilution of the devolved powers conferred on the duly elected representative by our people via our constitution.”

Opposition dropped the ball- Hon Malone

Speaking on ‘The Big Story’ with Ms Cathy O. Richards today, January 10, 2024, Mr Malone said he is “glad” Opposition Members were eventually able to join forces in terms of showing solidarity with the particular government.

Mr Malone said; however, that he “would go on record as saying there was absolutely zero reasons why they could not meet as one body” at the press conference called by the Premier.

The former legislator insisted that the show of togetherness and unity is what the people of the Virgin Islands needs to be seeing at this time.

“It’s bigger than you, it’s bigger than I, it's bigger than everybody…. A show of that solidarity, so they need to get together and demonstrate it properly, not hiding behind the proverbial banana tree to see how the crowd feels, and then you will come and then adjust your motions to fit the crowd. This is no crowd-pleasing moment,” Mr Malone stated.

I respectfully disagree. The Right Honourable Malone has consistently engaged in extensive research on the matter since the inception of the Commission of Inquiry (COI). His steadfast commitment is evidenced by his dedicated efforts to comprehend the implications and propose solutions through his One VI Agenda group. It is perplexing to me why the current administration has not established a specialized committee to address the COI, thereby failing to capitalize on the expertise of Honorable Malone.
A potential collaboration could have been forged with the special envoy, Mr. Benito Wheatley, who possesses remarkable acumen, albeit being engaged in other commitments. Establishing a committee under the leadership of Honorable Malone would not only ensure a proactive stance in anticipating any actions by the Governor but also contribute to avoiding reactive measures. Leveraging Honorable Malone's proficiency as a businessman and VIP stalwart, he possesses the skills necessary to negotiate in a diplomatic and effective manner that yields tangible results.

Thank you, however I can assure you that I am not the Hon. Carvin Malone. I have been on the opposite sides on may issues . What cannot be denied however is his profound knowledge of the COI issue. He has kept it at the forefront with his One VI Agenda group and I believe that demonstrates that he has consistently seen it as an important issue but even more important he has been proactive about seeking solutions. We must begin to put competency before complaisance in our leaders . It should not be whether we like Hon. Malone or not , but is he effective. I believe that it is sheer politics that has keep him out of representing us on this issue .To the detriment of our future.

The prepared use the weeks before election to make their closing arguments. Starting early enables candidates the flexibility and opportunity to adjust to changing situations and environment. Indeed, what the VI needs at this juncture is unity; there is strength in numbers. Power follows and flows from numbers. A picture is worth a thousand words. What a great visual it would have been if Government and Opposition showed a united front, standing shoulder to shoulder pushing back against UK-appointed Governor John Rankin, CMG, bombshell brazen power grab. The UK sees the VI and its people as belonging to and owned by the UK, but not an integral part of UK and not part of the UK family as it conveniently portrays. The US’ Insular Cases takes and hold the same view,,ie, the US territories, viz, Puerto Rico, Guam, Northern Marianas, American Samoa, United States Virgin Islands, etc, as belonging to the US but not being part of the US. This is a critical period for the people of VI and their political representatives. In this grave hour, political combatants must put aside their philosophical differences and come together to resist the rising tide of undemocratic actions, attempts to diminish rights, freedoms, blessings of liberty, self-determination pursuits, etc. Thumbs up to the Opposition for eventually showing and setting aside its differences with Government and uniting to fight the rising tide. Yes, the Opposition may have different views on the CoI. However, there will be plenty of time for those debates. Nevertheless, now is the time to don the battle gear to fight this power grab 3:00 am fire.

Moreover, the divide and rule conditioning, divide and scatter mentality construct employed by colonialists have controlled, influenced and retarded/slowed slaves and descendants behavior and progress, keeping them non-empowered, impoverished, powerless, non competitive and as an underclass. The colonialists have always had the assistance of some slave and descendants in executing their divide and rule,,divide and scatter plan. Colonialism’s Modus Operandi is dividing a country, colony, territory, etc into sectors and supporting a particular sector which is then beholding to it.

The Virgin Islands [British] is a deeply divided territory. And consistent with the divide and rule strategy, Governor Rankin and the cabal are weaponizing the VI’s disunity to easily do what it wants—-take control. Consequently, the VI people must unite to protect the VI for the good of Virgin Islanders and residents by working collectively, cooperatively, and collaboratively. Pushing back against the colonialism rising tide requires effective organizing, planning, unity. The Great March of 24 November 1949, which was led by national Hero Theodolph Faulkner, success depended and rested heavily on organizing, planning and unity. National hero Noel Lloyd and Positive Action Movement (PAM) success in putting Wickhams Cay and 80% of Anegada back into local hands rested on unity , organizing, and planning. The blueprint is there for fighting the rising tide. Let’s do dis damn ting!!

To GateKeeper, you got things, ie, reading, analyzing things, flowing real right. I like the focus on organizing, planning, unity, etc. It is both surprising and disappointing that seemingly a large swath of people are not treating this power grab as serious. Instead, of uniting huddling in their political corners, dividing.

The reason was Skelton's ego, you already know that. And it will (this will) keep him from ever becoming the premier. At every opportunity his ego trumps everything else. Can't expect him to change now. And Mather has blindly handcuffed himself to a backwards sinking ship. Penn, Walwyn & Turnbull are smarter than that. And Fraser is just Fraser.

I support Ronnie and the Opposition on this. Let the Government answer for not completing the COI recommendations on their own. A set of losers they are. It's like a bully picking a fight, then looking for help. Just PRIORITIZE and complete the recommendations and stop squandering the Government's money jetting all over the country and holding numerous parties. GROW UP KIDS!

With all respect I think Carvin needs to just sit this one out. The Governor came out and said why he is seeking additional powers. The current Government of the BVI (the green team) is who was to come and clear their end as to why some of these reforms which they did. In no part of this does the Opposition be informed of how far the reforms are on completion or any moves made by the current Government as to the current Government only share vires with their respect culeeges. Mr. Malone you are talking about unity now but my brother let me tell you it's the same team that got us all here today. You can't expect the Opposition to now help the current Government when the current Government keeps leaving the Opposition out of everything. Opposition knows what the people know and they know by the same way we do and that's when the current Government decides to do a press conference on a topic at hand.

People want to have adults like puppets. While the topic at hand is very serious government needed to conduct a press conference and the opposition needed to do one just as was done. We all know if it was the other way around there is no way in hell a Showande or Andrew led opposition were going to join with government and have no press conference. The government ministers does not take the opposition seriously. When the opposition walked out of the house, they laughed and pass thousands of dollars for frolicking trips with even concub….I….n…Es. It makes no damn difference how the press conferences were conducted. The point is that both Sides disagree with the governor, and it is left for us to see what he does now.

Jesus said it is not what goes into your mouth is what defiles you, but what comes out of it. With that in mind, I want to commend Hon. Carvin Malone for the opinion expressed. For those persons who are of the view that he was wrong or irrelevant, that is their opinions. Whenever and whatever the outcome may be, ALL the residence of the Virgin Islands will be affected by the outcome. I am totally disappointed with the senior members of the house of Assembly, in particularly, Hon. Julian Fraser, Hon. Ronnie Skelton, Hon. Myron Walyn, Hon. Marlon Penn and Hon. Melvin Turnbull. They should have known to put the country above self. As senior members, when they decided to hold a separate press conference, it shows clearly that there is disunity in the House of Assembly. This action gives the governor strength to exercise his authority.

I believe the members of the House of Assembly should have public meetings to educate the citizens and mobilize their support to thwart the aggression of the governor. WE have come too far to relinquish our rights to the British now. If this aggression is not abated, then the masses should consider the way forward. Furthermore, Massa days are over, and I cannot wait for his departure from the Territory.
