Opposition lacks support - Patricia M. Romney
“I don’t believe that the electorate gives enough consideration to the Opposition and the role that they have…. It’s a tough job to keep the government in check especially if they cannot influence what the final outcome is going to be, but I feel it is the responsibility to support the Opposition if they are really looking out for the interest of the country. It is about checks and balances,” stated Ms Romney.
Ms Romney, the daughter of the late Chief Minister Cyril B. Romney, was the first woman to be featured on Karia J. Christopher’s ten-week’ television Real Talk programme designed to honour outstanding women in the Virgin Islands (VI). The show is being run under the theme: “BVI’s 10 most inspirational and inspiring women.”
The show had its first airing last night December 20, 2016 on CBN Channel 51 when Christopher announced that she received overwhelming votes for Ms Romney, making her the 1st to be featured. The discourse took on a very candid format where neither of the women felt the need to hold back on any topic.
Not ready to take on political career
Politics was one of the topics and, in addition to sharing her views of support to the Opposition in the House of Assembly of the Virgin Islands, Romney asserted that she is not ready to take up a political career.
She said she has been approached many times and had given it thought but has made the conscious decision of focusing primarily on her business, especially the one year old car dealership; Tortola Auto Group (TAG).
“My father (Cyril B. Romney) passed nine years ago and the mantle was passed. My mom is still there in full support and she makes sure that my attention does not slide from that [business] being my first and foremost focus,” Ms Romney.
In another line of the candid discourse, host of the programme Mrs Karia J. Christopher asked Ms Romney about her thoughts on the so called ‘culture of victimisation’ that hinders freedom of speech in the Virgin Islands.
“Does victimization exist? Yes it does but it is not exclusive to Tortola or the BVI. You go throughout the Caribbean and you’ll see the same problems that we face. Obviously, the bigger the country the less focus on an individual.”
Ms Romney, however, took time to give ‘kudos’ to persons who have refused to stoop to the pangs of vicitimisation and step forward to say what they have to.
