Opposition hopeful @ least one gov't member would support Motion of No Confidence

Opposition Member Honourable Melvin M. Turnbull (R2) has said only one member of the government in the House of Assembly (HoA) is needed to support the Motion of No Confidence. Photo: Facebook
The Opposition had planned to bring forward a Motion of No Confidence against Premier Dr the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) on Tuesday, September 3, 2024, during the Nineteenth Sitting of the First Session of the Fifth House of Assembly (HoA) of the Virgin Islands. The Opposition’s plans were nipped in the bud as Premier Wheatley objected to the motion being on the Order Paper citing incorrect procedures were followed by the Opposition. Photo: Facebook

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Opposition Member Honourable Melvin M. Turnbull (R2) has reminded that only one member of the government in the House of Assembly (HoA) is needed to support the Motion of No Confidence for it to be effective.

Over twenty reasons supporting the motion was intended to be presented to the House for consideration. These ranged from Premier Wheatley’s alleged fiscal irresponsibility and accountability to the lack of funding and support for key sectors in the Virgin Islands.

The Opposition’s plans were nipped in the bud as Premier Wheatley objected to the motion being on the Order Paper, citing incorrect procedures were followed by the Opposition.

Evidence too much to be ignored

During a press conference following the Opposition’s failed attempt to bring the Motion of No Confidence during the current sitting of the HoA, Hon Turnbull said, “It would be very hard based on these twenty plus areas or clauses for the people of the Virgin Islands, including those on the government, to disagree with the things that are being said and being placed to them by the members of the Opposition.”

Hon Turnbull said the Opposition is hopeful that at least one of the members of government in the HoA would have the “conscience” to understand that the VI is bigger than party politics or their loyalty to the Premier, who he said continues to make “blunders and mistakes”.

Yesterday I noticed the voters list is out. Are there persons in the different departments trying to sabotage the government. Public works, Education, Health. Think about it. Are they working with the opposition?

The Opposition is slinging a Hail Mary, using an NFL term, and hoping that it treated in a touch down. It is a long shot but possible, for everyone has a price. Both Wiliard Wheatley and Cyril Romney leverage their seat as a Kingmaker to become Chief Minister. The Vote of No Confidence will come to the floor of HoA for a vote . And with a razor thin majority, the VIP should be concerned and worried. Politicians are about self-interest, not the public interest, they will stay where they are for self-interest or leave for self-interest. This is about politics, ie, conflict/disagreement. We are political animals as E. Leonard notes and the combatants are playing leaving nothing on the field. The Opposition experience is akin to the bride leaving the groom at the altar, slaughtering the wedding on the altar of distrust, selfishness, greed, opportunism, etc. Let’s get on with the vote of no confidence, for there is much work to be done, enough theatre, performance, etc already.

To RealPol, those are powerful vibes, especially politicians are about self-interest, not public interest. The reality is we are all about self-interest.

What is the incentive for a govt member to support the motion? How would it benefit that person.? I will thought that the opposition already have a secret commitment from a member of Government...I personally think that Ronnie and NDP is secretly trying to get rid of Frazer who they see as a problem and so hoping that going back to the poles will get rid of him..Back to the poles VIP will win just seats...Decastro.

Now they will offer Lorna the Premiership if she crosses the floor. Life is a funny thing and politics is even funnier! For all of you who think any of those 13 people in HOA gives a  $%^$ about you or the BVI as opposed to the power they hold, you are in for the ride of your life. You all put too much faith and energy into these useless people. For starters, check their records and ask what have they done even for themselves and then ask how the hell they can do anything for you or this country. It's all a reality show with endless seasons, ENJOY!
