ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI—Premier Dr The Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7), has categorically denied claims made by Opposition Leader Honourable Ronnie W. Skelton (AL) that the Opposition was deliberately excluded from the recently concluded inaugural Tourism Summit held at Peter Island Resort in the Virgin Islands.

Speaking at a press conference on January 23, 2025, Dr Wheatley was asked to address allegations that Opposition Members were not officially invited to the event, after which he disclosed that invitations were extended and criticised their [collective Opposition] decision not to attend.

“They were invited. I was told that they were; Each of them was called. The Permanent Secretary invited them,” Premier Wheatley asserted and reiterated, “They chose not to come and instead had a press conference at the same time as the tourism summit that was taking place. A lot of the issues they’ve been speaking about over the years were being discussed at the summit.”

The Premier did point out that Hon Lorna G. Smith, OBE, a Territorial At-large Representative and Opposition Member in the House of Assembly, attended the event. “One member of the Opposition did show up, which is Hon Lorna Smith, so I don’t see why any of them couldn’t have done the same.”

Opposition’s Frustration

Opposition Leader Hon Skelton had claimed that the government failed to formally include Opposition Members in the high-profile summit.

In a press conference on January 17, 2025, Hon Skelton lamented, “I have not been invited. I did receive what I assume was a message from a public officer the night before it was to commence. I since reached out to them and asked them what they were contacting me about.”

Hon Skelton expressed frustration at the timing and manner of the alleged oversight, stating, “I got a telephone call about 5 o’clock the day before apologising for the oversight of not inviting Members of the Opposition. I have to agree with what is being said.”

Hon Smith claimed she attended the event in her private capacity.

In reference to the Topic Issue, Tourist meeting that was held at Peter Island Resort in the BVI, a formal invitation for the Opposition was necessary, not just they come if they wanted to.
The Opposition is a useful part of the demographic political system worldwide. It, the Opposition side should not be ignored or belittled by the ruling party. Hear say without proof should not be accepted as fair democratic practices, even though democracy is not physically practice as was documented in its original launched more than 2,600 years ago in Greece, neither is it's being practice now anywhere on this earth.

So a last minute phone call after 5 pm the day before that may or may not have gotten through to the members counts as good enough to our premier. You plan this thing for how long and you can’t even send a email but gonna instead try to defend the slackness and disregard claiming that they lie because they were invited. Is like just stop making excuses and do better man.

I can see that one of them caught on early and addressed everyone at the engagement. She ought to have suggested that the others in her group sign up as well.

When my sister and I were 5 and 7 we used to have this back and forth with mom when something broke or we made a mess. It wasnt me mama it was Susie. No mama it was Carly not me. But no mama it was Susie. This is the level of behaviour of the people we elected to lead us. How can there be any progress?

Childish behavior by these whiny do nothings. I have to get a formal invite with stiff paper and flowery embroidery and a gold seal.
