Opposition APNU-AFC claims victory in Guyana polls
Minutes ago the coalition held a press conference where it made the disclosures, despite admonition by Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission Dr Steve Surujbally who warned political parties against claiming victory ahead of the Commission’s official press conference to come later this evening May 12, 2015.
Speaking to Virgin Islands News Online, Chairman of AFC Raphael G. C. Trotman confirmed that the coalition has declared victory based on the numbers tallied so far.
“We can now say that we have won 182,000 to the PPPC’ 157,000. Based on the statements of poll still to come in, it is not possible for them to overtake us at this stage. We are confident about that,” said Trotman.
“We have counted 2035 statements of poll or 88 percent out of a total of 2299,” said Trotman, adding most of the outstanding statements of poll are from Region Four, considered generally a stronghold of the coalition.
Sweeping trend of change
If confirmed by the Guyana Elections Commission later this evening, it will signal the continuation of a trend which saw the Opposition coalition sweep victory in St Kitts and Nevis after a marathon run of the displaced regime over decades. The same could also be said of Anguilla’s elections which took place on April 22, 2015.
Anguilla Outgoing Chief Minister Hubert B. Hughes saw his ruling party, the Anguilla United Movement (AUM), defeated at the polls. The AUM was not able to get even one seat out of the seven elected seats in the Anguilla general elections. The Opposition Anguilla United Front (AUF), which lost power in 2010, returned in grand style and took 6 out of 7 seats with Victor F. Banks at the helm. The other seat was won by an independent candidate.
On February 16, 2015 the people of St Kitts and Nevis made their voices heard and gave a mandate to the Opposition coalition Team Unity, lead by Dr Timothy S. Harris, following about 20 years of the Labour Party led by Dr Denzil L. Douglas. The regime of Douglas had been marred by claims of breaches of the Constitution and the disregard of the rights of citizens, abuses of power and abuses of the Citizenship by Investment Scheme which led to Canada cancelling its visa free arrangement for citizens of St Kitts and Nevis.
Loss of support
The PPPC, the party of Dr Cheddi B. Jagan, lost their parliamentary majority in the general elections of November 2011 and since then the Opposition has been growing in their appeal to the masses who saw the Government as abusing their powers on a number of fronts, some of which includes the allocation of state spectrum to friends and family of members of the Government, use of state resources for questionable projects and the continued abuse of procurement regulations resulting in the single sourcing of pharmaceuticals to a company owned by a friend of the former President Bharrat Jagdeo.
Other abuses the public had been concerned about was the almost crumbling $200 million Skeldon Sugar factory, the construction of a Marriott branded hotel with state resources and the former President’s pension and other benefits package which is considered perverse given the economic state of the country.
