Only 100 days to London 2012!
As the motto for the London Olympics was revealed as "Inspire a generation", events around the world were held to mark the 100-day countdown to the opening ceremony.
“We are engaged in a very exciting period,” said Ephraim Penn, President of the BVIOC, who was absent from the celebration. “With Tahesia Harrigan-Scott qualified to run in the 100m dash, it seems quite appropriate to highlight a hundred days to go with a hundred metre race!”
The BVIOC coordinated with the BVI Athletics Association and chief coach, Mr. Dag Samuels, to involve many of Territory’s young athletes who were attending regular training sessions on the special occasion and each of the top three runners were given their own taste of a medal ceremony as they were presented with Olympic Pins at the conclusion of the races.
Whilst some of those who took part, like Nelda Huggins, Shiann Vanderberg and J’Maal Alexander may have half an eye on the 2016 Games, others like Sanya Penn are actively involved in attempting to qualify for London.
Penn joined up with Karene King, Ashley Kelly and Harrigan-Scott recently to run a 45 second 4 x 100, a time which placed them 3rd at a Meet in Miami. The same group of girls, with maybe the addition of Chantel Malone and Brittany Wattley, will be teaming up again at the Penn Relays at the end of the month.
Their qualification time target, which they have to achieve twice, is somewhere around 43.50.
The team has had little chance to practice, especially with the hand overs and confident with more runs they will achieve that time.
Malone, of course, has already come close to qualifying marks in both Long Jump and the 400m and if all succeed then this would have a historic significance for the Virgin Islands as the first time whereby the nation is represented by an all female team at the Olympic Games.
The BVIOC launched its Time for London 2012 campaign at the end of February with the first activity held on March 8 at the A.O. Shirley Recreation Grounds when the Royal Duke of Gloucester met with the VI’s past Olympians, primary school students and young athletes from national sports federations.
Following the London 2012 official flag raising ceremony on July 17, the BVIOC and athletic delegation will be presented at a special reception hosted by the BVI London Office and the Friends of the BVI at BVI London House.
