One Love crowned champs in 7-a-side F'ball tourney
Having played earlier games on the field at Enid Scatliffe Primary School, action switched to Sea Cows Bay for Finals Day and started with the Hosts, the Panthers, facing a do or die encounter with the Rebels F.C.
A win for the Territory’s oldest recognized Football Club would have made for some interesting calculations in the zone standings, but neither side could break the deadlock as the game ended 0-0.
The result knocked out the Panthers, who finished 3rd and meant Rebels and Old Madrid would progress to the semi finals.
The other zone was much more cut and dried with both the Islanders and One Love battling to a 0-0 draw in the final group game, knowing they were both already through to the semi finals.
Both semi finals were tense, tight affairs with exchanges of attacking play and resolute defense highlighting the match ups.
There was a small ripple of shockwaves as Old Madrid held onto to take the Islanders to a penalty shoot out, which they eventually one 2-1 after Ranalie Caines missed for the Premier League Champions.
Old Madrid, of course, have been promoted to this seasons Premier League, so have laid down an early marker on their more renowned rivals.
The other semi final also went to penalty kicks, which feature the stress and pressure of shooting from the half way line into the small empty nets.
A large crowd had gathered by the time the Final kicked off and they were rewarded not only with some fine food, refreshment and entertainment, but also bore witness to the day’s only goal in regular play.
Just after the five minute mark Carl Steward netted to give One Love the lead and it would turn out to be enough as Old Madrid’s tired legs could find no way to equalize and the Trophy went to One Love.
