JOHNSON’S GHUT, Tortola, VI- Established since 1975, the Humane Society of the British Virgin Islands has rescued thousands of unwanted animals in the territory; however, the society is now in dire need of help.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic the Society has taken a major hit has it been unable to raise funds for its current upkeep on borrowed time at Johnson’s Ghut as well as for the construction of a new shelter in Josiah’s Bay.

Humane Society faces closing its doors

The revelation was made last night November 5, 2020, on JTV’s The Big Story, with Cathy O. Richards.

"Our greatest fear is that we wouldn't be able to move and all these animals would be left abandoned on the street. No one would be there to take care of them but we would just have to close our doors," a situation, according to General Manager of the Humane Society of the VI, Mr Vijay Bissoondutt, the Society is hoping to avoid.

According to Bissoondutt, since the onset of COVID-19 there has been an influx of animals coming into the shelter.

There are currently more than 87 dogs and cats at the shelter with only about 50 kennels to house them.

Society facing eviction

Bissoondutt noted that the Society has already secured a plot of land at Josiah's Bay on which to construct a new animal shelter but needs approximately half a million dollars to erect a suitable structure.

Today, they only have a small percentage of the money.

The Humane Society is currently facing uncompromised eviction from the land they currently occupy at Johnson's Ghut.

According to Society member, Kirstie Palmer, vacating is not an option. "We were due to leave in December. We have to be off these premises and into the new premise but unfortunately due to COVID, money has dried up.

$$ urgently needed

“We have managed to get $140 thousand in, which is ready for the new shelter, which is going to be in Josiah's Bay."

Palmer shared that approximately $330,000 is needed.

"We need another $30,000 to even do stage one of the building which is to put up our building and concrete on the floor and then another $300,000 to think about even putting up walls, windows, electricity, plumbing, before we could even think about going," Palmer stated, adding that "the problem is we have to go, we have absolutely no choice in this, we need as much help as we can get."

Influx of pets during pandemic

It was also disclosed that some 133 animals were surrendered to the Society over the past four months.

According to Palmer, this is due to persons leaving the islands, “secondly people having to downsize in their apartments and unfortunately their landlords are not allowing a pet in so they have surrendered a lot of their animals."

Through collaboration with PAW BVI; however, the Society has been able to have close to 100 pets shipped to other countries via freedom flights.

Another flight is scheduled for mid-November, according to the Society.

Even if I could, I wouldn’t donate to people who think like you. We are all God’s creatures! You obviously didn’t have the pleasure of owning a pet to teach you how to love animals. One of the sad realities of a lot of us. I pray you work on your inner self to see the good in everything.

@Windy, every living thing has to eat. So are you saying innocent animals don’t get hungry and have to eat also? If most of you people in the BVI were kinder to the animals life would be much kinder to you. Right now I would prefer to donate dog and cat food to the ANIMAL SHELTER RATHER THAN DONATE FOOD TO A HUMAN. WHY? BECAUSE THE ANIMAL WILL NOT BITE THE HAND THAT FEEDS.

@pet owner: What you really mean is a dog or cat feeds your need for narcissistic supply with no possibility of enforced accountability, and appears to absolve some people of responsibility for the chattel slavery that was imposed on the ancestors of native Virgin Islanders. When you treat your fellow man with the same love and kindness bestowed upon our four legged friends, then you have leave to discuss the foibles of “you people.”

The only reason that the BVI has a problem with stray animals is white expats taking them in and then leaving them once they are finished with the BVI. Sad but true.

Is your name Karen? You’re certainly sounding like one...

Clearly white with no moral compass about the plight of us suffering in BVI that you exploit for your own gain. Still.

There is a hierarchy, but when it comes to your priorities, again you put you & your pets first. Before us humans. As of course you still don’t see us as humans, no doubt, Karen.

I’m with you, I would prefer to give a animal a plate of food and water to a animal before I give it to a human. Humans are back stabbing and disloyal. You can give a human food and your last dollar and they will turn on you. Animals won’t. You want a best friend? Get a dog.

If everyone just spayed and neutered their animals we wouldn't have such a problem.

@ pet owner. What do you mean "If most of "YOU" people"? So you are a male or female Karen from somewhere else. Well, go back where you came from and take your little dog Toto with you Dorothy. Talking about feeding animals be fore people...STRUPPS!

Go F**k off. I can say what the F**k I damn well please. FYI, THE ANIMAL SHELTER WILL BE JUST FINE. I BET THOSE ANIMALS WILL EAT BEFORE YOU DO. I AGREE, MOST OF YOU IS SUFFERING AND CONTINUE TO SUFFER BECAUSE OF THE WAY MOST OF YOU IN THE BVI TREAT ANIMALS.

My question is why do we have to take a story like this and make it personal..God made us all which include “ALL” Living things (humans, in the sea and on land) and “we all” have to eat.. and to you pet owner I hear what you’re saying for sometimes There are persons that bites that hand that feed them, but it’s Never a good thing to generalize by saying “you people” for this is offensive.. I am a cat lover and pets can be very loving animals. I cared for my cats as I would care for a child-lovingly. As humans it’s a fact that we are not always loving one to another and yes at times we do forget the good another do towards us.. all I’m saying is that we don’t have to get personal- if we can assist let us do so and stop the personal attacks..

I thought the government and rotary club was helping them out with funds for a new building. I guess they had to raise the rest of the money or something they been trying. All these rich white people and they couldn't raise that money. Not being racist or anything but white people sure loves their doggies. Man best friend they say. Black people, ever notice a white person would pass you straight when you're walking or exercising but if you have a dog with you they would blow their horns or stop and say something nice about the dog. I love dogs but I definitely put my fellow man first. You want to help all dogs in need but what about the people or children in need. Adopt a child, commit to helping that child whether it be financially or whatever way possible if you want to really help. Dogs hold a very special place in their hearts and they ignore the rest of their fellow man. I had a white lady tell me you should spay your dog and not breed her too many dogs support adoption. Well i understand the issue with the dogs but you can't tell me what to do with my dog. People should have to choice to breed their dogs if they want the sell pups and get good homes for them.

For someone "not being racist" your post sure sounds pretty racist. If you dont believe me simply change each occurrence of the word white your wrote with black and see if that helps you comprehend your racism.

I stated something that occurs rather frequently among a certain type of people and that means me racist. Ok,black people love eating chicken, watermelon and hating on each other...There you go..... Equality.

A friend of mine had the same problem with a white lady from the shelter. She got her fellow white to report her advertisement on Facebook. But the funny thing is I’m from Miami I made Tortola my home everyone I see have their dog and their dog eats. I know you cannot go to the UK and do what they do to black people her to the whites there in the UK. (I’m a White American)

With COVID-19 is understandable that things are tougher especially for these type of organizations. We have been BVIHS supporters for decades. RIP Tessa, was such a strong fighter and hard worker for this institution. It is needed. What is hard to understand is why they have to BUY land and build in BVI where is so expensive! The work can be done on rented or owned property the same. Also noted that in those days there far more events and activities carried out through the entire year for fundraising. Now is Covid-19 but for a long while, it seems that the administration is taking it a bit too easy and just resourcing towards asking for moneys and not working hard enough to MAKE the money. It is sad to hear but that idea is a "pie in the sky" if they have no funds. It is a noble goal but without $$$ is not possible. Sell the land, make a good rental deal with your landlord, expand your existing facilities, upgrade them and work with what you have. Work with what is tangible. Good luck Vijay but maybe is time for new strategies.

This is Sad. I wish we knew earlier. I hope it is not too late for BVI to still raise funds to keep the doors open.
