BAUGHERS BAY, Tortola, VI– Commentator Claude O. Skelton-Cline, while on his live radio show Honestly Speaking, could not contain his disbelief and anger that Honourable Lorna G. Smith, OBE, a National Democratic Party (NDP) At Large Representative, has joined the elected members of the Virgin Islands Party (VIP) to form the next government of the Virgin Islands.

“I could not have fathomed within the deepest recesses of my imagination that if anybody would have moved from the National Democratic Party, NDP, or the Progressive Virgin Islands Movement, PVIM…not Lorna Smith, I would have put money on it,” Skelton-Cline said on the April 25, 2023, edition of his show on ZBVI 780 AM and live-streamed on Facebook.

Mrs Smith forms Gov't with VIP 

In a bombshell announcement yesterday, April 25, 2023, Mrs Smith announced that she would be teaming up with the Virgin Islands Party’s six elected representatives as the seventh member to help form the new Government under Premier Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7).

It came as PVIM led by Hon Ronnie W. Skelton (AL), NDP led by Hon Marlon A. Penn (R8) and Progressives United (PU) led by Julian Fraser RA (R3) could not reach an agreement to form the next government and oust the VIP from office.

Both PVIM and NDP won 3 seats and PU won 1, which meant they had the opportunity to take the government with their 7 seats combined. 

Hon Smith said her decision came after a discussion with several parties and ultimately the decision to join with the VIP while remaining a member of the NDP is one that came from putting country above self.

A blow to the NDP - Skelton-Cline 

Skelton-Cline said: “Just when you thought you have seen it all, keep on living you will see some more… even as I sit here right now, I still can’t believe it, I still can’t grasp it,” he said in obvious frustration.

The talk show host added that he wish he was in a dream or a nightmare rather than to have seen Ms Smith team up to form the VIP Government, and questioned the electorate on whether they have voted for what transpired.

On the 2023 campaign trail, the talk show host openly used his platform to back the PVIM and indicated he was no longer a member of the VIP.

Further, Mr Skelton-Cline, who had prophesied a woman becoming Premier, admitted to backing PVIM’s Shereen D. Flax-Charles who crossed the floor from VIP, rather than the District 9 candidate, Hon Vincent o. Wheatley.

He was also pushing Perline R. Scatliffe-Leonard in the Seventh District; however, Premier Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley retained his seat.

“I don’t know how the National Democratic Party (NDP) survives this, this is the second time they have put a death nail in the NDP and this may be the final death nail,” he added while questioning the integrity of the process.

“I remain grateful to the people for the faith they have placed in me and I will uphold my promises to you, now and throughout my tenure. The people have spoken: they want a coalition of persons to run the territory,” she added.

        I am an NDP Supporter, but it is time to get real. Lorna is not NDP's problem. The ones the main artery of the party loves, is the problem which is Marlon. Let's examine Marlon (The only Accidental Leader). He is the one & only accidental leader but the party letting this slide to the death of the party. He pronounced himself leader after the 2019 elections when he was one of two NDP members who won with Alvera being the next. Here lies the problem. He held no meaningful meetings in 4yrs to allow party members to select the new leader or ratify him/her in an open and transparent manner. He avoided such party meetings. Then Alvera crossed the HOA floor under his leadership & joined the VIP Government as a result of his poor leadership. Just like now with Lorna, some of my fellow NDPers blamed Alvera and turned against her with a passion. Again, Marlon was allowed to tell his usual non-factual but emotional stories to make him look & sound good which caused the NDP Party supporters like myself at the time, to once again bury the symptom of the problem (In this case Alvera) & not he (Marlon) who is the problem. The 2023 General Elections didn't come as a surprise as it was known by ALL to happen in 4yrs after 2019. Here lies the other issue. He then jammed the party last minute, with his stories again, so we were forced to leave him as leader to go through the 2023 elections. He failed in four years to grow the NDP and worse, yet he failed to get 13 candidates. Simply put, NO ONE WANTED TO FOLLOW HIM. None of us stop to ask WHY? It is because he is a poor leader who masters how to keep power through divisiveness. This is disgraceful & unacceptable. He only managed to start the campaign with 7 NDP candidates. Two founding members had already launched as independent At-Large candidates long ago. How come they knew elections was coming & not Marlon? He managed to get others in the Party to help convince those two (Kedrick & the same Lorna Ayo my fellow NDPers now want to kill) to change from being independent candidates & run with NDP. Hesitantly they did so because they felt he was not a leader. They were correct because if they could have started campaigning on their own means he could have started campaigning from a long time ago because the election was not scheduled like you would schedule a surprise birthday party. IT WAS KNOWN TO BE COMING! Let us not forget he said he joined Natalio to save the country because the UK did not want the VIP Government. Well, we all now know that was also not true (Another one of his non-factual stories) as Tuesday 25th April, 2023, the same UK Governor sworn in a 6 member VIP Government with a one alliance in the person of Lorna who is an NDP who like Alvera crossed the floor as a result of his poor leadership. Man strupeeesss, the list of Marlon mistakes is too long so I will stop here for now and if things continue with NDP under Marlon, then so will the NDP.

      He & others will get over it. We just had a free, fair and transparent elections and we all know we had to live with whatever the results would be. There must be a winner and a loser. There is no need to be bitter nor blame Natalio, Lorna, nor VIP. I am not a VIP supporter & did not vote for them, but I like the outcome & will support the government. I am disappointed & ashamed of Ronnie, Mitch, Myron, Fraser & Marlon who because of arrogance, pride, greed and selfishness could not form the Government with the seven members they had. As a woman it seems to me they took for granted Lorna because she is a woman and like most men think of woman they should be seen and not heard and accept what is decided. They are the ones who have proven to be greedy and a mistake. Long Live the Prosperity of the BVI.

    Claude what's the difference mark was VIP jump to NDP so what if Lorna jump to VIP, the other parties were having in house fighting as to will be premier Ronnie want it Marlon want it Mitch want deputy, Fraser want Premier it was all about position for them over country Lorna wasn't even offered a ministry with all her experience. She did the best thing in order to make a difference within the our country. So get over it.

    Well CSC that's how gambling works and how Vegas has waterfalls in the dessert. The public must be more educated on the constitution and understand you can't force a coalition. Teamwork requires sacrifices and without that the dream won't work. We can grasp that concept. Expecting ppl who don't talk due to hatred of each other to work out a power play is insane. Expecting ppl who can't trust each other to form a government under pressure is also insane. Manage your expectations and keep them in the threshold of reality and not a dream. 3 blind mice vs 1 unified group was an easy call to make.

    It's ALL MARLON'S FAULT!! How could he ever think that Kedrick and Lorna cared or respected him or NDP? Because Kedrick left NDP in 2019, Sowande won the 7th District but you allowed him back into the fold. NDP get what they deserve and it's same Lorna is the reason why many people stopped supporting NDP.

    I am at a lost for words at the behavior of this man on the radio. I listened to him and was so embarrassed. His conduct was totally unacceptable for a man who goes to church. Shameful. Yahweh sets up and he takes down. Claude should know that of all persons. Promotion comes from above. End of story. When men are too selfish Yahweh steps in. He sends a woman like Deborah to help Barrak in the bible who had no balls to lead the charge against the enemy. Lorna is Deborah. I am happy with the results.     If this Good lady was so much about country above self why couldn't she accept a lower position than DEPUTY PREMIER. - Accepting a back bench would still enable a government to be formed. So from that angle I don't buy the "country about self" rhetoric. But look at it... She did a good thing. If she didn't, we would have the "hung jury" phenomenon and someone else would be deciding for us. Gotta thank her.
