'Not enough tongue to give thanks' on 73rd wedding anniversary!
William I. Rhymer, 96, and Josephine A. Rhymer, 93, both lifelong Methodists, celebrated their anniversary surrounded by their children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great, great-grandchildren at the Rhymer Estate in Round Hill, Cane Garden Bay.
“We do not have tongue enough to give the heavenly father thanks and praise for his goodness and works and just how we lived this long life here on earth. We want to live it around God’s holy throne,” Mr Rhymer said.
The Rhymers both expressed joy and happiness on the achievement of the milestone and said the most exciting part over the years was raising their ten children; Allan, Dennis, Joseph, Henry, Joyce, Shirley, William Jr, Elroy, Janet and Violet. The couple also have 24 grandchildren.
Mrs Rhymer planted and sold produce in her younger days while Mr Rhymer served as a farmer of some renown for many years. At one point they won the coveted prize of Farmers of the Year in the territory. Mr Rhymer also worked as a road warden and sailor as well.
According to his eldest son, Allan Rhymer, 72, his father was a man who loved sports and horseracing in particular, he was also an avid boat racer. “I would say he was very fortunate,” the younger Rhymer quipped. “He was a hardworking guy, I mean, I think he did everything in hard work that you could think about,” he said of his father.
He related tales of sailing trips between Tortola and St Kitts, St Croix, Puerto Rico, St Martin, St Thomas and the many storms he literally weathered.
“I give God thanks for my parents,” he continued, “because in all those years that my dad was away sailing, my mom was the one here who ploughed the ground, took care of the cattle and also took care of her children.”
He felt that their love for their fellow man kept them above all else. “They loved people, they loved to share,” he said while recounting that the couple planted just about every fruit or vegetable that was grown in the territory and shared this with others.
