ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI– Clergyman and co-host of Eye on the Future of the Nation, a radio show on ZBVI 780 AM, said the Virgin Islands (VI) remains in a state where nobody knows the general direction of the territory as it relates to policy and this is affecting how business is done.

Mr Skelton Cline was at the time debating Dr Kedrick D. Pickering on the Tuesday, June 4, 2024, edition of the show as to whether there is a perception that it is too difficult to do business in the VI and what role the civil service plays in this.

“Nobody really knows what this change, that general policy direction of the country and might I add, it isn’t just now,” Skelton-Cline said in reference to what he termed as the the declining level of components in the business industry.

“And so we have to find a way to more clearly, lucidly, nationally determine what exactly is the policy direction of the country, or at least the vision of the country, because each government of the day does have some responsibility to shape or revise and certainly to put the policies in place that facilitates that national agenda”

He added that the VI’s woes are both a structural and a human resource issue, however, there is a "dumbing down" in the public service.

Mediocracy in VI

Meanwhile, Dr Pickering said, in the context of the topic, mediocracy seems to have crept into the VI where it has become the standard.

“How can we inspire our people, to recognise and feel that this country belongs to us and that every person matters and, especially if you have a job to do, to do it to the best of your ability?” he questioned.

“We’ve done some great things in this country…, our financial services rose to international prominence, our sailing industry rose to international prominence…. Have we lost our way that we are so mediocre now that businesses suffer?"

Dr Pickering further questioned whether the civil servants are responsible or is it a divine force beating the VI down, to which Skelton-Cline said it remains a number of issues.

      Jesus associated with misfits. He came to save the ones who are lost, not the ones who were already saved.

        @BUT

        Not sure who you refer to as the ones already saved. But consider;

        The book of Mathew:

        23 But he answered her not a word. And his disciples came and besought him, saying, Send her away; for she crieth after us.
        24 But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
        25 Then came she and worshiped him, saying, Lord, help me.
        26 But he answered and said, It is not meet to take the children's bread, and to cast it to dogs.

        Question is: Which group or people were/are the house of Israel and why did/do they need saving?

    Honestly do this man actually think anybody wants to hear anything from him right now.

    Talk on the street is you run from USA because of issues to only come here and fall into the same or similar problems.

    For someone who preach Jesus you sure don't learn from your mistakes. Then again you speak more on worldly things than those of the bible.

    That in the bible is called a wolf in sheep clothing

    The financial services rose to international prominence, and the sailing industry rose to international prominence because they are predominantly run by ex-pats.

    We are all tired of listening to those, who have bled every ounce of blood from the BVI that they could. They are just mediocre and overpaid. Peas in a pod that have no business trying to speak to us about saving these beautiful islands. Will the real Smart Critical Thinkers please come forward, and save the B.V.I. from all of the wolves in sheep's clothing?

    Our national political parties have no particular individual philosophy. We have no laboru party, we have no liberal party, we have no conservative party. No christofascists like up north, no socialist nor communists… There is no singular overriding philosophy or economic policy for any of the political parties, so no surprise that there is no sense of where the compass is pointing. This means that the people in power are acting solely in a reactive manner. Planning therefore fails. And long range planning never takes off. This isn’t uncommon throughout the Caribbean.
