No reports of mold @ Library but AC being replaced - Dr Marcia Potter
The library has been closed since around May 17, 2016, due to what our sources told us was mold in addition to a broken air conditioning system.
We had for an earlier story published yesterday May 30, 2016 sought a comment from Dr Potter as to the reasons for the library’s closure and she had promised to get back to us.
Speaking through her Information Officer April T. Glasgow yesterday, Dr Potter said, “yes there have been complications with the air conditioning unit and we are working assiduously to replace that system.”
She continued, “It is not as simple as just buying a new unit and putting it in. We have to replace the entire system and that will mean changes to the vents. But we are working with people right now to get that done.”
It is reported that many of the workers of the library for years have been complaining about the building making them sick and have from time to time come forward with medical certificates to confirm their ailments. In addition, some have complained that the mold in the building is a challenge as it causing further issues to their health.
A number of the staff members have reportedly gotten medical papers to show their different ailments they link to the working conditions at the Library building, while the Library remains closed.
On the malfunctioning air conditioning unit, one employee told our newsroom on condition on anonymity that “a few days after the AC went down workers were willing to come to work, however, the heat was too much to take, as many of the widows could not open.”
Meanwhile, the building that houses the library in Road Town belongs to the Malone's family. Local businessman Carvin Malone confirmed this information to Virgin Islands News Online but noted that it is not the family's responsibility to address the issue of the AC unit as it was installed by government.
