ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The Management of OneMart in a public statement today, October 3, 2024, said the company is monitoring the ongoing strike by dockworkers in the United States (US) closely and assessing the potential impact on the food supply chain to the Virgin Islands (VI).

The strike, which commenced on October 1, 2024, is being participated in by thousands of dockworkers from Maine to Texas. This has affected ports that handle about half of the US shipping cargo.

It is a known fact that a prolonged strike could affect essential goods coming into the Caribbean region.

Immediate disruption not anticipated, contingency plan in the works

OneMart in its statement said, “At this time, we do not anticipate any disruptions to our food supply, and our stores are adequately stocked to meet current customer demand.”

The company said; however, its management is working on a contingency plan with suppliers to “ensure we can continue providing essential goods to our customers” in the event the strike is prolonged.

OneMart encouraged customers to remain calm and to avoid making rushed decisions.

The BVI Ports Authority has also assured that October shipments to the VI are expected to proceed as scheduled with no interruptions, as the West Palm Beach Port is not partaking in the strike. The West Palm Beach Port is an essential hub for the VI’s primary carrier of cargo, Tropical Shipping, from the US to the VI.
