Nibbs inspires District 3 to Neil Thomas Championship win
Nibbs had to leave the physical game suffering from a slight injury in the 3rd quarter, but bounced back onto the court in the 4th to ensure his team didn’t lose the lead and was in the thick of all the action both defensively and offensively.
He finished with 13 points and 5 steals and was there on the free throw line knocking in a crucial basket with seconds to go. Dillon Etienne finished with 12 points and 4 rebounds, Carl Alexander added 8 points and Caleb Leonard 6, but the win belonged to Nibbs.
“I’m feeling great,” said Nibbs. “I knew it was a big game, I didn’t give up and stayed cool under pressure.”
Rhevaun Sprauve finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds for District 4 whilst Jachoy Walwyn added 9 points in the losing cause and both Dante Vanterpool and Ryan Richardson finished with 8.
District 4 had a much easier ride in the playoff game against District 2 as they romped to a 51-33 rout. Walwyn scored 18 points, 16 rebounds, 7 steals and 3 assists, but couldn’t quite reproduce the magic in the final. Dante Brewley, who had a quiet final, scored 13 points with 7 rebounds in the playoff win, whilst D’Moi Hodge scored 12 points for District 2.
In the Under 10 Final, District 4 exacted revenge on District 3 with a comfortable 32-15 victory led by Miquel Marshall’s 16 points and 8 rebounds. Jamoi Levons contributed 12 points, 7 rebounds and 5 steals. For District 3, Trayvern Pringle scored 6 points with 2 rebounds and K’ntenay Maduro added 4 points and 4 rebounds. Malaki Smith also scored 4 with 3 rebounds.
To reach the final, District 4 beat District 2, 33-17 led by Levons’ 14 points and Dante McKay’s 12. Both players added 2 rebounds and 2 steals whilst for District 2 Isiah Thomas scored 15 points out of the 17 point total. He also picked up 4 rebounds. District 3 had a much tougher passage, finally overcoming District 5, 20-18. Elroy Matthew scored 10 points and Smith added 6 to secure victory despite Tedeek scoring 13 for District 5.
During the presentation ceremony after the finals at the Multi Purpose Sports Complex, organiser Milton McLean expressed his thanks to all the sponsors and players, remarking how good the standard of play had been. “I was really impressed with the under 10 division was a new idea. In the Championship game we saw MVP Jamoi Levons, he can dribble, and he can shoot and rebound the ball. Requan Garraway has a great understanding of the game.”
McLean also described the U13’s as excellent giving special mention to D'moi Hodge, Akeem Nibbs and Requan Sprauve. “Although District 8 didn’t make the final they had some great players too, it is really encouraging to see that the level of basketball is steadily going up in the BVI and we need to keep these youths entertained and active with more leagues and tournaments.”
Next up is a girls’ training camp in mid-August and then a district league in Sea Cows Bay.
