BAUGHERS BAY, Tortola, VI- Persons covered under the National Health Insurance (NHI) scheme in the Virgin Islands have been advised to watch their NHI spending.

Talking Points co-host Mr Damion C. Grange, who works with the BVI Health Services Authority (BVIHSA), has encouraged residents to access health care through the BVIHSA to prevent high medical bills that NHI will have to cover.

$1M NHI cap- Damion C. Grange

Speaking on Talking Points on Monday, February 10, 2025, on ZBVI 780 AM, Mr Grange said that in addition to accessing the best health care in the Virgin Islands (VI) from the “only accredited organisation in the BVI, the BVI Health Services Authority”, patients will also see savings on their NHI use.

“A lot of folks still aren’t aware that there is a one million [dollars] cap from birth to [death] on your NHI,” he explained. “The minute you are born and you access your NHI, you’re spending out of your one million dollars.”

Guest Dr Aasha Marie Flax-Miller from the BVIHSA said motorbikers especially need to be made aware of this, as they can “rack up some really big bills” as patients following accidents.

Grange agreed, trying to put his point further into perspective by saying, “Imagine this, you have a one million cap and from the day you were born and once you’re accessing your NHI, that’s a deduction from your one million.”

Be strategic about NHI use- Damion C. Grange

This, he continued, is why accessing healthcare through the BVIHSA is important because it allows patients to spend less from their allotted monies.

Grange also warned those covered under NHI to refrain from unnecessary use.

“People are using NHI willy nilly and sometimes it's overused and it means that you need to be very careful and strategic about your use and don’t just think that you have this unending supply of coverage,” he stated.

Once you show up to any medical office in BVI they ask for it, even if you don't care to use it.

So when you pass that cap is it legal for you all to deduct a payment for a service I don't receive? Only in BVI such lawlessness could go on. How is this legal?

Well you more than likely aren't contributing 1 million to the pool yourself, so you benefit more at the end. Unless of course you prefer to only use what you contribute.
