ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- This upcoming week, October 7 to 11, 2024, all public and private schools across the Virgin Islands (VI) will engage in activities aimed at encouraging students to develop a love for reading during the observation of Reading is Fun Week 2024.

This year, Reading is Fun Week will be held under the theme ‘Reading Transforms You’, a press release from the Ministry of Education, Youth Affairs and Sports said.

Reading activities scheduled

During the upcoming week, the Bulletin Board and news clips will be read by students on 284 Media and ZBVI. Members of the public including students will also read short excerpts from books and poems on the Government of the Virgin Islands website, ZBVI, ZCCR radio stations and 284 Media.

The East End, Long Look Community Library will also host readings of selected schools and E-Book presentations on Wednesday October 9 and 10, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m.

The public is invited to view and interact with the series of videos that will be posted on the Government of the Virgin Islands’ Facebook page at BVIGovernment. The videos posted includes a series titled “Book Talks” that will be hosted by April Glasgow, where poets and authors will share excerpts of their work with her.

Students and adults will introduce books in another series of videos and read excerpts explaining how the books transformed the way that they critically think in real life situations.

Education Officer with the responsibility for English Mrs. Janice George-Harris said, “The public is also invited to find time to read and share excerpts from books with other people during the week. A community that reads is a community that is progressive.  Reading transforms you. Book donations can be made to schools and the public library. Let’s read, BVI read.”
