ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- After four (4) years at the helm of the BVI Health Services Authority (BVIHSA) and now without a new contract, Darlene A. Carty-Baptiste is going nowhere fast.

Reports reaching our newsroom from our sources within the ruling National Democratic Party (NDP) are that the USVI resident has landed a new job in the Virgin Islands. She is expected to take up, via contract, the newly created post of Director of Medical Tourism.

Our newsroom is awaiting the details of the job description and the salary associated with the post. Meanwhile, the Administration is busy getting office space ready for her in the Ministry of Health and Social Development.

Transparency?

It is unclear when she will take up her new post, whether locals were considered, if the post was advertised, and if she was handpicked and by whom.

Ms Carty Baptiste is also scheduled to speak at a World Medical Tourism conference later this month in Washington DC. It remains unclear if at that speech she will be representing the Virgin Islands as the new Director of Medical Tourism.

The former CEO of the BVI Health Services Authority was replaced by Trinidadian Paula G. Chester-Cumberbatch.

Meanwhile, at a press conference at Peebles Hospital on September 5, 2016, Chairman of the Board of the BVI Health Services Authority (BVIHSA) Bishop John I. Cline was asked to respond to reports that Ms Carty-Baptise was going to remain in the local health care system.

Bishop Cline said he did communicate recently with Ms Carty-Baptiste about the possible employment but said he did not know what the job position was and when an agreement would be reached.

Attempts to reach the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health and Social Development Petrona N. Davies and Ms Carty-Baptiste were unsuccessful up to post time.

I totally done with them (NDP) for sure. All of them have changed and are no longer humble. They help who they want. Just how I campaigned for them last time, won't happen again. Looking forward to having committed, community minded, educated, focused, peoples person and humble person who is willing to represent the people who enabled their success, and not a chosen few.

What next? Dem people mussa drink the koolade. What medical tourism when we cannot even get our own people to use our health services? This gotta be a big joke! If funds are running so freely in the BVI there are LOTS more priorities that require immediate attention. Why this imported Prima Donna?

Wake up, guys, from your dreams and fantasies. Government, you need to get your act together - and fast.

It's an actual thing though. Medical advancements and technologies in the BVI could attract a lot of patients/tourists\ for exclusive treatment.

Medical tourism properly implemented will be hugely profitable for the HSA. Medical tourists will pay 10 times what residents pay for use of the operating theatres in Peebles, the only cost being the time the theater is in use. Doctors and support staff from outside come to perform the procedures so it does not deny residents access to health care staff. It's a win-win proposition that deserves funding for development.

What f****in medical tourism? Any body in their right mind leaving their country to come to BVI to seek medical treatment? The Peebles Hospital is not even outfitted to treat a cold. This position is just. Bull Sh***. My God what is this government doing to the people? NDP Government has got to GO. The hospital hardly has medical supplies. The kitchen can hardly find food to feed the patients, and these idiots only hear the term Medical Tourism, and just jump to put Ms. Baptiste in a position that don't make. My question to Ronnie Skelton, is what Specialty Treatment is available at Peebles Hospital? What treatment are they going to offer that will attract people to come here, oppose to going somewhere else? Ronnie you and the NDP government should rethink, and cancel this nonsense so that you all don't look stupid. When Dr. Tattersall was at Bougainvillea, the specialty was Plastic Surgery. I don't know if that is still the case, but at least they had a specialty to offer. What Specialty Treatment is available at Peebles Hospital??????????????????

WTF, you are so right. As you said, these jokers just heard a term which they clearly don't understand and jump on the band wagon. Their doctors are not vetted, they have no administration or protocols in place for basic service. Recently, a young lady died just sitting in the waiting room to receive treatment. What millionaire is going to come here and be subjected to that?
One of their heroes, Richard Branson, took a fall from his bicycle and had to be flown to Miami for a mere skin abrasion. He lives here, and if he can't accept their medical service, why should any other billionaire or millionaire? The whole thing would be a joke if wasn't so pathetic.

@WTF, I am from Tortola but, I reside in the States. When I was there on vacation, I know things can happen but I told my kids please try not to break anything or get hurt because they are not going to receive proper medical care. I don't think Tortola take Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance or Child Health Plus Insurance.

Really wanted to hear her side of the story. All we are hearing is Clyne side...I've learn never to judge or condemn anyone Without heating their side of the issues.... I'm sure she has a lot to say... That won't make Clyne or the minister look Good... But she choose Wisdom in silence and leave them to God. Now she is rewarded with the most appropriate job .. Best of luck Lady. I don't know you, but you are a wise Lady...

We are going to loose alot more if we don't get this Government out next term no matter what. You guys tell me that we don't have that education from none of our very own from abroad to give the new position to? No this is sicken. I see the people and I include myself to be used and feel so useless and only good for the elections. I know the supporters of the NDP are not going to say nothing about this but will see that them get re-elected in a few years although bad things are been seen with the naked eye in the country. Yes, I lost my interest in the NDP administration from another example like this crap.. Our people are crying for proper leadership.

Never say it cannot slip lower.. When the NDP signed the contract to fun the cost of operating a scheduled air service between Beef Island and Miami, which includes the lease and operating cost of the aircraft, rental of office and operating space in Miami, the full cost of support staff including their accommodation, it was said that this was irresponsible behavior. This was considered to be ridiculous until we were told that serious consideration was being given to signing a contract with a local contractor to extend the Airport's run way at a cost of $200 million, $50 million more than an alternate bid. Today we are being told that the out going CEO for the hospital will be retained by our medical services to fill a newly created position, " Director of Medical Tourism". This is not a case of ignorance, this is a case of irresponsible behavior. It is high time for the FCO to ask the Governor and the Premier to stand aside and implement measures to bring an end to this miss use and abuse of power by our elected representatives.
  • Post not advertised (11/09/2016, 21:57) Like (7) Dislike (0) Reply
The post was not advertised but they will hurry and do that now that everything is in public, Just like how Cline announce they hiring the Trini when it was no signed off by Cabinet. He was told to hire Dr. Georges. Even the Board didn't know he was making the announcement because they agreed to hire Georges. Cabinet does not have any Balls they cover up for John Cline, I wonder what he has on them! People know the law and breaking them and Cabinet covering up for them. The law says 'all jobs must be advertised, this was not but yet we have someone getting it. It would be interesting to know if this was in the approved 2016 budget. Some in the ministry busy making hell for locals and yet breaking the law to keep this woman. Wonder between her, the CMO and the PS health, who has the highest salary. Though the country broke! This government is officially a BIG JOKE!

@Post not advertised. There is absolutely nothing factual about your comment. To begin with, there is no post in government called Director of Medical Tourism. I could go on, but many people are more interested in slander and gossip than facts, so carry on.
      • voter (13/09/2016, 14:15) Like (3) Dislike (0) Reply
If this whole job story is even true it would most likely be a consultancy and subject to normal public procurement rules. Which may or may not require a tender process which anyway can be waived by Cabinet.

Thats why unemployment is so high in the BVI. My thing is once ur contract is up its time to leave tbe country. Someone should have been already trained for ur positiin or in this case pulled from our labor pool since it waa just created. This hould go for government and the private sector. This needs to b changed.
