New designs for Territorial dress to be ready for tomorrow – Hon. Walwyn
In light of this, the two finalists, Florence Phillips and Kristin Frazer, have promised to whip up new designs by Wednesday, June 20, 2012.
This was revealed last evening, June 18, 2012 during NDP Radio where Eileene Parsons and Hon. Myron Walwyn explained their decision to listeners.
The dress, for male and female, were first introduced to the public on June 10, 2012 at the Eileene L. Parsons Auditorium to a large crowd. However, according to Hon. Walwyn, a number of persons called him and he is aware of his Government’s mantra that if persons are concerned about something, “we have to address it.”
“When you are talking about a Territorial song and Territorial dress we want a wide acceptance as you can possibly get because you can’t force them to wear the dress. It has to be something that they feel proud wearing. And we got some comments but constructive comments because I know at times we can be very political, but when you hear objective people with no axe to grind, taking their time out to come and look for you and talk to you and gave you suggestions and feedback. You have to listen,” the Education and Culture Minister said.
He also admitted that when he walked into Caucus and saw the look on his colleagues’ faces, “like we have to tell Myron something”, it was suggested that “perhaps its best that we go back to the drawing board and I think it’s the right decision to make”.
Meanwhile, Mrs. Parsons, the Committee’s chairman, stated that the two finalists were so receptive of working together and by Wednesday they are going to come up with two outfits that will be presented to the public. “...and the cabinet will make the decision because we would like to have those clothes ready for our athletes to go on the road to 2012 in London. We would like to have them outfitted in what these two young ladies working together and they said they are spending many nights collaborating and they love it.”
In her true witty style, Mrs. Parsons also thanked the Minister for listening to the public, “because you could have said, you know this is what you going to get and somebody would have stoned you. The people were quite vocal in what they wanted and I am glad that you and cabinet decided that let us give it another shot.”
