ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The future of aviation in the Virgin Islands (VI) is said to be in great hands with the newly appointed Board of Directors of the BVI Airports Authority (BVIAA), under the leadership of Chairman, Mr Theodore Burke.

The BVIAA Board held its orientation session on October 27, 2022, at Maria’s by the Sea, which allowed members the opportunity to confirm the Ministry’s vision for air service development in accordance with the national plan of development for the Territory.

This session also exposed members to critical information, primarily good corporate governance standards, their mandate and expectations, the VI’s procurement policy along with their roles and responsibilities to ensure that their tenure is a successful one.

'Modernising airport & increasing airlift' priority- Hon Rymer

According to a press release from Government Information Services (GIS) on October 28, 2022, Deputy Premier and Minister of Communications and Works, Honourable Kye M. Rymer (R1) told the new Board members that increasing and enhancing connectivity to the Territory with the current facilities is paramount.

Honourable Rymer said, “I am confident that we have selected the best complement of members to take the mandate forward through an unbiased and transparent process. I am here to support you as you continue to build on the foundation already laid with the single goal in mind of developing and modernising the system of airports in the Territory and increasing airlift.”

“The further development of our Territory is reliant on the ease of access to and through our Territory and I am delighted that each of you have agreed to serve in this capacity to ensure that we can realise the development of our airports,” Honourable Rymer added.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Communications and Works, Mr Ronald Smith-Berkeley encouraged members to work together as a team and to ensure that all matters are thoroughly deliberated before making a decision, which should always be done in accordance with the applicable laws and policies.

'Work together as a team'- FS Jeremiah G.A. Frett

“I encourage you to work together as a team and ensure that you make decisions in line with the laws of the Virgin Islands. I understand that some decisions will be tough ones, but they will be necessary ones to ensure the success and further growth of the organisation,” Mr Frett said.

Chairman Mr Theodore Burke pledged to execute the mandate and vision of the Ministry at the Board’s level and said he was committed to lead the Board in a fair and transparent manner and adhere to the 21st century best practices in good corporate governance standards. Members too pledged their full support and commitment to upholding good corporate governance standards during their tenure.

Members of the new Board were chosen through an application process where they were interviewed and later recommended and appointed by Cabinet and the Financial Secretary who is the sole shareholder of the organisation.

I’m excited about your venture, but can you fix the current issues with the existing employees who are unproductive and abuse their power and egotistical behavior? I think you guys know exactly what I’m saying, but I’ll remind you that it has people with made-up titles that are making well over $7000 a month, and a senior admin officer who can hire her family and give them big positions when they just graduated High School. What the staff would like to see is an example of disciplinary action against those who feel that they can’t be touched. While we like the little ones coming around and talking with the staff, please be warned about the board members that are from the Airport HR DEPT. Also, can you start by addressing Salary as the benefits of essential workers are not properly portrayed like other units in Govt? The airport salary is the lowest when compared to other essential services. The busy season is coming up and we would like to see you around more than ever to appreciate the working fire, security and air traffic execute to make the BVI Airport Authority look good.

We seriously need 12 people on a board to manage this operation? I would think 6 would be more than enough. How can this role possibly require 12 people on a board??? Stop wasting the people money.

I agree with “dear board”. This unfair hiring must stop. your complaints are right on the ball. You are not making it up. No one is against younger kids but hire young men and women who actually wants to work and not somewhere stick in a corner on a cell phone. The amount of sh** that goes on at that airport will blow your mind.

weak! Watch and see the airport will be in the same struggle 1,2 years from now. Noting will change because they all have other jobs that comes before the airport . Just like the previous board. Who got absolutely noting done. They were just a bunch of names gaining illegally. ???? I not saying these board member are not educated and smart. They all have good jobs and this is my point. They will not give the airport 100% because of that.
We need board members who will take staff complaint serious. Address matters at the airport and stop hiring little ones who are not ready for the working environment. Who thinks they are on a college campus .

Is there a reason why there is only one female on this board?

I totally agree with you all comments.
I tried applying for several jobs in government including the airport but no success at all. Here in BVI seems like these government jobs come with who know you, who you know or links on the inside. As a young woman from the soil who is a hard worker, not lazy, goes above & beyond the call of duty but just can't get through. It's very frustrating when you have to struggle in your country looking for a job while trying to survive al at the same time(yes I have been trying & looking). I wish for the times when people used to care about each other & have love too for each other.
