ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The Virgin Islands (VI) is currently under a Hurricane Watch in association with Tropical Storm Ernesto, which means that hurricane conditions are possible in the area within the next 12 hours.

Meanwhile, Governor Daniel Pruce has activated the National Emergency Operations Centre at Level 1, which is a monitoring phase.

The Government of the Virgin Islands, in a press bulletin today, August 13, 2024, said residents should rush to complete storm preparations by this afternoon and prepare to remain in a safe space tonight and tomorrow as the storm passes.

Non-essential government offices will remain closed on Wednesday, August 14, 2024.

It also advised residents to follow updates from the Department of Disaster Management (DDM).

Ernesto packing 60 mph winds

At 11:00 AM the Virgin Islands was placed on a Hurricane Watch.

At 2:00 PM, Tropical Storm Ernesto was moving west-northwest at approximately 18 miles per hour.

Ernesto is expected to pass near the Virgin Islands later tonight.

Sustained winds with this system are at 60 miles per hour.

Approximately 4-6 inches of rain are expected.
