Natasha J. Chalwell tipped to be Deputy Director of BVITB
The same sources familiar with the process said Mrs Chalwell, who has been with the BVI Ports Authority since 2020, has already been highly recommended by the BVI Tourist Board and her contract is in the final stage of negotiations.
Mrs Chalwell brings to the table a Bachelor’s Degree in International Tourism and Management and also has qualifications in hospitality.
It is unclear when she will start, as Director of the BVITB Mr Clive L. McCoy, when reached, said he had no comments on internal Human Resources matters. The last Deputy Director was Rhodni A. Skelton, who left a few years ago.
What does the Deputy do?
The BVITB has been rocked with staff resignations, payouts and the sacking in December 2020 of the controversial talk show host and a strong critic of the Premier, Cindy L. Rosan, when her job was made redundant. It has been alleged that she was after a million-dollar payout from the Dr Natalio D Wheatley’s administration; however, that is not going anywhere, according to one person in the Ministry of Finance.
The Deputy Director is charged with assisting the Director of Tourism with the responsibility of developing, implementing, and managing a series of tourism marketing initiatives, including the oversight of the development of the Board's annual Marketing Plan, establishing and maintaining networks within the regional and international tourism industry as well as assisting in overseeing general operations.
Tourism a political football?
Some Members of the Opposition have used the BVITB to play anti-government politics, despite all Tourism arrival numbers spiking in every sector of the industry.
Premier Wheatley, who is also the Minister of Tourism, reported in July that tourism numbers in the VI had hit a record high in the first half of 2024.
According to the Central Statistics Office, compared to the same period in 2023, tourist arrivals surged by a remarkable 17.2%, totalling 682,773 visitors as opposed to 582,674. This exceptional performance, the Central Statistics Office stated, could be attributed to substantial increases across all categories of tourists.
Meanwhile, Mrs Chalwell could not be reached for comment up to publication time.
