Nanny Cay’s development project benefiting many locals- Hon Fraser
That commendation came from Opposition leader Honourable Julian Fraser, RA (R3) as he reminded those present that when the facility was bought, it was nothing but a rundown development on its way out.
“Since then we have all watched the steady rebuilding and expansion, resulting in meaningful commerce in the community and most importantly, the creation of jobs,” Hon Fraser reminded.
Hon Fraser also expressed his overwhelming satisfaction of the fact that many locals were able to get jobs during the course of the project and will continue to benefit for the other phases.
"Just recently, in what can be described as phase one of this most recent expansion, the new boat-yard was built in its entirety by a Third District contractor, with all the material, equipment and trucking from right here in the Third District," Hon Fraser adding that it is his intention to help facilitate the staffing of this marina and the developments beyond today.”
Phase One complete.
What’s ready for usage now is said to be Phase One of the over US$30M development project. The complete marina will have 120 slips suitable for yachts ranging from 30′ to 75’ with T-heads and a bulkhead capable of berthing mega yachts to 150’ in length.
Phase Two is expected to start during the summer of 2017, according to General Manager of Nanny Cay Resort and Marina, Miles Sutherland-Pilch.
He also noted that phase three will feature the construction of a number of villas on the new marina; condo blocks, each with three 4-bedroom and four 3-bedroom condo units.
Among those present at the official ceremony was Premier and Minister of Finance Dr The Hon D. Orlando Smith (AL), who also holds the portfolio for tourism.
Premier Smith said the development marks a new chapter in the maritime industry in the Virgin Islands. "As a government we continue to do our part to protect, strengthen and develop the marine and yachting industry. We have been revamping and updating legislation and policies to make them more relevant to modern day operations.”
Project continues
Meanwhile, Virgin Islands News Online had first reported on December 2, 2016 that the marina was already in use prior to the official opening.
Once the entire Nanny Cay Development Project is completed, in addition to the marina facilities, the expansion will include, new and enhanced walk ways and recreational areas; a new restaurant, wellness centre, gym, and social areas; an improved youth sailing centre and facilities; improved resort areas and event facilities, along with new commercial retail and service space.
The current operations at Nanny Cay account for 300 jobs directly and indirectly. Nanny Cay employs about 100 staff and estimates that the completed outer marina and related amenities will create over 100 new jobs. The company has also promised that construction is expected to be sourced through local contractors.
Despite the bad start with cries of environmental violations, the project is on the move and is expected to be a huge boost to the Virgin Islands boating and marine sector.
