NANNY CAY, Tortola, VI- Nanny Cay Resort & Marina, spearheaded by its General Manager Mr Miles Sutherland Pilch, has begun a programme to assist the Government of the Virgin Islands with clearing the Sea Cows Bay Harbour of derelict or damaged vessels.

The harbour has been an eyesore for almost seven years following two Category 5 hurricanes in 2017. Many boats of all sizes had been damaged during the monster storms, resulting in them being submerged or partially.

Those vessels underwater cannot be seen and are causing hazardous conditions for boaters.

According to someone familiar with the operations, a survey has revealed some 60 derelict vessels in the Sea Cows Bay Harbour.

Nanny Cay & others helping

Mr Sutherland Pilch has received support from Husky Salvage and Towing, along with businessman Ricky E. Connor of Ricky’s 24hr Trucking & Sewage Disposal in the dialect boat removal operation.

So far, Nanny Cay has removed two boats from the Sea Cows Bay Harbour and has placed them in its boat yard to be crushed.

Third District Representative Hon Julian Fraser RA has been one of many voices in the district advocating for the boats' removal.

Earlier this week, Former Speaker of the House of Assembly and Sea Cows Bay resident Julian Willock took to his Facebook page to announce the start of the cleanup, which began on March 26, 2024. Mr Willock praised Mr Sutherland Pilch for his work on the project.

Mr Willock noted in his Facebook post, “I continue to insist that the Sea Cows Bay Harbour must be cleaned up now….”.

Willock, Forbes and Nanny Cay doing other projects

Mr Willock, along with Ms Kishma P. Forbes of Virgin Islands School and Office Supplies, has team up with Mr Sutherland Pilch of Nanny Cay to do some other projects in District Three. Last year they hosted a successful job fair at Nanny Cay where some residents were hired on the spot in the marine sector. They have also said the job fair will be an annual event.  Nanny Cay has also raised funds to support a food pantry organised by Forbes and Willock for District Three and made contributions to the St George’s Secondary School, in the form of some benches.

It is our understanding that a total of three boats will be removed in the first instant from the Sea Cows Bay Harbour by Nanny Cay and after the 2024 Spring Regatta consideration will be given to removing others.

The cost of the project to Nanny Cay is unknown as up to publication time General Manager Mr Sutherland Pilch did not return answers to our news center’s questions.

      @Capitalist

The boats were abandoned in public waters for almost 7 years. Maybe the government gave him the right to recover and take ownership of the boats and do what he wants with them. So why don't you work out a similar deal with the government and stow them in your yard to "make money"?

@Capitalist why people like you don’t keep your mouth shut if you don’t have anything to say. If you knew Miles and all what he does for the BVI you would know he tries to give back, and for your information Nanny Cay marina is always full in and out of the water.

to us financially? Don't forget that every transaction has an expected reaction in this world of business, moreover, why only CCB area. Since September 6th, 2017 desastrious hurricane remains messy, not only the marine areas, but moreso on land,

Does VIP only means Virgin Island Party or does it also means Very Ignorant Party that has ignored their responsibility to the voting public?

Figure it out in your mind

Just curious, some time back there was an article bragging on about a million visitors coming to the BVI. How much of the $10 per person environmental tax is going towards helping out in this long overdue clean up and why does it take a private company to spearhead the effort? How much are the insurance companies putting into the kitty as they are the proud owners of many of the vessels after they pay out the total losses and the owners do not want to repurchase the loss? Shame on boat owner’s who didn’t have insurance and walked away for the general public, tourist and government to deal with. But the real problem stems from a reactive government rather than a proactive one, measures should have been put in place long ago to deal with this situation, hurricanes have only been coming here since a guy invented a watch and calendar right? But then again if the high and mightiest can’t figure out how to protect its own assets how are they going to protect the assets of others? So sad to see that the eyesores of Irma have sat for this long before someone has finally stepped up to make a difference but even sadder to think that it wasn’t the leaders of this country that initiated it. Who will be the next non government entity to clean up Road Harbour? I mean it’s only the first thing visitors see when they enter the territory! Shame, just flat out shame!

This has been needed for so long. Mr. Pilch did a very good thing for the BVI because no one else came forward to do it. Don't hate on a person who made a difference when you could have come together and done the same thing. Thank you Mr. Pilch for a job well done.

The RDA couldnt get it done...the NDP couldnt get it done. the VIP couldnt get it done.
These boats have been a disgusting mess for locals and tourists to look at...government doesnt give a damn..boating tourism is such a massive income fir BVI and government doesnt recognize just hoe important it is to remove the boats. rather they spend money on a road to nowhere in roadtown...or partner in a new hotel in port purcel..forget all the crap thats in the water

well done well done well done.
well done to Willoc nanny cay and husky salvage and ithers involved. lead the way

So , what do you suggest they do ? Maybe they should put them back and wait another 7 years of nothing.

i just know that one of the huge cost prohibitors 3 or 4 years ago when the RDA was sending this out to tender was the disposal if the fiberglass. it cant be burned and it cant go in to land fill is what they said.
if no one cares about the environmental impact of burning them...come live west end when they do burn them.
or just tow them out to 3000' of water and sink them.
out of sight out of mind i think is your philodoohy. the governments philosophy is bury its head and let someone else deal with it
