NACAC U23 medal haul has ‘boosted my confidence’ for Worlds- Beyonce A. DeFreitas

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Double medalist at the 2023 NACAC U23 Championships in San Jose, Costa Rica, Beyonce A. Defreitas of the [British] Virgin Islands has said her successful performances have served as a confidence booster ahead of her next assignment- The World Athletics Championships slated for August 19-27, 2023, in Budapest, Hungary.

DeFreitas won a silver in the U-23 women’s 200-meter dash in 23.59 seconds, and a bronze in the U-23 women’s 100-meter dash in 11.41 seconds in Costa Rica.

The young athlete returned to the Virgin Islands on Wednesday, August 2, 2023, and was greeted by family members, President of the BVI Athletics Association Steve Augustine and members of the media.

‘Building block’

“It was a building block for the World Championships. It definitely boosted my confidence, DeFreitas told Virgin Islands News Online (VINO).

According to her, it has been a long athletic season, “and to see that I can go out there and still compete and win medals is definitely a confidence booster.”

Asked what she will be doing ahead of the World Championships, DeFreitas said, “Just rest and work, rest and work.”

The talented sprinter is expected to compete in the 100m and 200m in Budapest.
