My team believed in me as a player & leader- MVP Steve E. Parillon
Draft pick Parillon, who also became Player/ Coach during the regular season and Play Offs, saw his team overcome a nearly disastrous third quarter, when they were down by as many as 14 points and had only scored 5 themselves with under two minutes remaining.
The Splash Brothers, who had led at the half time interval, recovered to start the final period just 8 points in arrears and went on a mini run to further reduce the arrears. However, Bjorn Caleb and Douron Phillips restored the 10-point advantage for the defending champs.
The very physical Phillips then fouled out and with 7:24 still on the clock, Parillon splashed in from long range and added a field goal to make it a 3-point game at 65-68 Gunners.
It was still a 3-point game with just under 4 minutes left and then Aubrey S. Daniel scored twice in quick succession to put the Brothers back ahead. Inside the last 2 minutes and Ashfield Frett netted a free throw and another Daniel score gave Splash Brothers a 3-point cushion at 77-74.
Ray D. Victor remained calm under pressure to score 2 free throws with just 30 seconds left and put the West Gunners ahead by 1, but Daniel scored again to make it 79-78 and on their last possession, Romain Minott was stripped by the hard-working Brothers defence and the game, the title and the hearts of many, many fans were won.
Splash Brothers were ‘relentless’
“Man, I just want to give God thanks!” exhaled former Bayside Blazers player Parillon at the end. “I’m 38 years old and to be here amongst all these great players, like Ray Victor, Douron and the others, I want to give thanks to my players too, they are relentless guys and they believed in me as a player and as a leader.”
Parillon scored 19 points with 10 rebounds, but Aubrey S. Daniel led the way with a massive 27-point contribution, whilst Ashfield Frett finished with 17 points, 9 rebounds, Shamoi A. Dagou 10 points and Michael Benjamin 7.
The Gunners got 23 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists from Ray D. Victor, 16 points from Douron Phillips, 13 points and 17 rebounds from Bjorn Caleb and 12 points with 7 rebounds from Romain Minott.
Splash Brothers convincingly won Game 1
The sweep had been set up by a large win in Game One on Friday, 99-82, with Dagou scoring 20 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists, Parillon adding 19 points with 12 rebounds, Deangelo Sampson also 19 points with 12 rebounds, Frett 18 points and Daniel 14 with 17 rebounds.
Phillips top scored for Gunners with 28 points and 8 rebounds, Minott 16 with 7, Omar Walker 10 points and 8 rebounds, Nigel Cary 10 and Nicols Charles 9.
