‘Multi-Purpose Sports Complex held hostage’- Clement 'Tony' Donovan aka Bone Crusher

Host of the ZBVI 780 AM sports show, Sports Talk, Mr Clement 'Tony' Donovan aka ‘Bone Crusher’ during a live broadcast of the show on Saturday February 24, 2018 said the Multi-Purpose Sports Complex is being held hostage by persons made homeless by the hurricanes of September 2017. ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- “We really need the Sports Complex. We need to get the people out of there. They holding the building hostage. Enough is enough,” stated host of the ZBVI 780 AM sports show, Sports Talk, Mr Clement 'Tony' Donovan aka ‘Bone Crusher’ during a live broadcast of the show on Saturday February 24, 2018.

“The school children them walking and looking in. They can’t go in. What kind of thing is this?”

It was also alleged on the show that one of the persons in the shelter even has two apartment buildings but remains in the shelter and allegedly collects a government cheque for $2000 every month.

Co-host of the show, former legislator and sports icon E. Walwyn Brewley aka 'GM' suggested that the alleged apartment owner living in the Multi-Purpose Sports Complex kick out one of his tenants since his apartment was destroyed by Hurricane Irma.

Mr Brewley also said the people need to call on the Government to “do what they need to do.” This prompted Mr Smith to say if the Government can’t get the persons out of the shelter then the Governor will have to do it.

‘Sports Complex held hostage

The men on the radio panel found it unacceptable that after nearly six months since hurricanes Irma and Maria, persons were still living at the Multi-Purpose Sports Complex, preventing any sports from being played at the Territory’s lone indoor facility still standing following the hurricanes.

“The Sports complex is being held hostage” by persons who allegedly have alternatives, stated Mr Donovan.

“I can’t understand how you could have three or four people have a building that size hold up for months and it look like it will go right into another hurricane season,” he added.

While making reference to a resident of the Multi-Purpose Sports Complex, Mr Donovan said “Can you believe it? You have a man down there, he has two [apartment buildings] and I must be paying for light bill and all kind of things for this man…?

It was also alleged that there are persons living in the shelter collecting cheques from Government and can afford to pay rent.

It was on February 22, 2018 that Premier Dr The Honourable D. Orlando Smith (AL) announced in a statement that as of February 1, 2018 there were only 36 persons remaining in public shelters.

“More than 3,500 individuals have received financial assistance through a programme by the BVI Red Cross with support of the Government; 328 uninsured homeowners have received assistance from our Housing Programme to date. Our most vulnerable continue to receive support from our Social Development Department…” Premier Smith stated.

Former legislators are ‘non-existent

Meanwhile, Mr Brewley was encouraged to use his weight as a former legislator to push the Government to free up the Multi-Purpose Sports Complex so that sports leagues and programmes can resume.

“You can do that but even when you are a politician, if you are on the wrong side of the aisle they don’t study you. So when you out altogether it is like you non-existent. You could tell them what you want but you non-existent.”

@leave flectcher......Stupid comments like that is why the VI has a crime problem, seems like common decency and respect for what is good and right isn't what some of us care to prescribe to.

Hurricane Irma really did bring out the evil in a lot of landlords. Some of them were even demanding full rent even though the apartments were damaged. To say they were heartless isn't enough to describe their inhumane treatment of tenants. Shame on the one up huntums ghut

@Willy and Joy... the banks ask for full payment those 3-6 months are still owed. How about those tenants who refuse to pay and also refuse to leave. If the landlord can't collect from insurance and can't collect rent how are they to repair their building.

Some of us like asking for handout and usually its those who aren't willing to earn a living, those who expect others to take care of them. If the tenants are so unhappy ask how man of them would prefer living in the great outdoors vs their damage apartments.

If you have a place to stay then get out of the complex. If you don't have a place then you should have been looking since October, because you know good and well that you could not stay there forever. The landlord should be out of there already. I am living in one side of my building and each month when I get my social security and pension, I do a little and I haven't gotten any government financial aid at all. He has 2 houses and should be as

you are still doing it. Get your own name!!!! Why don't you respect people's identity? you take their telephone numbers too when you feel like it?

@ so called Original Pete, I have seen you a couple of times going on about this name thing that you have no disclaimer to. Why don’t you just use the name as you have original Pete, and be done with it, or just use another name. No one have rights to any name on this blog. See the name I changed to because someone used the name I had, it is that simple.

name becomes an identity for ones opinion. It means something. If I like what a particular blogger writes, I will pay attention to what he/she says because the post may be thoughtful and full of ideas. If that name constantly changes because someone is too lazy or disrespectful to find their own identity, that loyalty is diminished. The name I have is Pete and has been for years. Though not a "legality", everyone has some right to a name and should be respected if it is already being used. So now you are identified as "Goofy"? Really? Is that what you want to be known for?
          • Goofy (27/02/2018, 14:53) Like (2) Dislike (0) Reply
The name is not important to me, what is important is that I get my point across to people. There are soooooo many Pete or peters here. Get a grip and just keep using original Pete. Do you own this blog space? Did you pay for it? Wow, some people think they are more important than they are. What you blog is what people are seeing and don’t care about you name. WOW!
            • pete (28/02/2018, 00:20) Like (3) Dislike (0) Reply
This tells me a lot about you and your lack of respect for others. It is not about self-importance. It is a personal identity chosen which means something to that person and identified with their opinion. You may even want to go so far as call it a brand. It is poaching without regard. Luckily, you won't have that problem. No one wants to be known as a half-wit "goofy".

Government should rent a 1 bedroom studio apartment for all of them to stay in and they will eventually leave when they don’t have privacy.

Apparently then, squatters are now taking over this Gov building,
Put them in another Gov Building, The one up Balsum Ghut,
Easy fix. Remove these leeches ,forcibly if necessary and place them in custody.
Publish their names, The public has a right to know the names of the occupants of a public building.

@ boy blue: put them in the administration complex....this one is debatable because I say leave them because some of those same folks worked hard for and in this territory; on the other hand that building was constructed for the purpose of sports: should one throw our own people out; because they ended up sheltering there by chance and not by choice: if the shoe was on the other foot where you or a member of your family was in the same position, would want them to be thrown out.....

The article infers that they have alternate solutions to their current mode of occupancy. If this is true then they are illegal and unreasonable campers whether or not they have laboured for the BVI. Camping there if they have other means indicates a personal choice.

Is there not even a room at the old hospital that can be used to accommodate them? I'm not advocating to throw them on the streets because I do not know their story and there goes me but for God's Grace, but there must be an alternative location to place them until they can do better

If he has resources, then the Gov should place a lien on his property and recoup whatever was given to him.
In addition, if necessary, he should be forcibly evicted but standing by and allowing this individual to do as he illegally please just because he born here is nonsense . I have a donkey that was born here but I will be darned if I would allow it to make me a donkey too.

Get the Social Development Dept. in there, and help the people find another way. The Multi Sports Complex is no way to live, and they are not there because they like it. Social workers should help the people find an apartment or a room to rent, and help those with a house apply for the Housing Assistance Program. Once they have a place to go, they will go.
