'I know firsthand the pain & fear'- Mrs BVI
The Prevention of Gender-based Violence Campaign is spearheaded by Mrs British Virgin Islands 2024, Rhonda R. Victor-Pinnock, a domestic violence survivor.
"I know firsthand the pain and fear that comes with being silenced. This campaign is more than just an initiative; it's a lifeline for those who feel unheard and unseen. I am committed to being a voice for those who are unable to speak up, and to creating a safe and supportive community where every individual can live free from violence and fear. Together, we can break the cycle of abuse and empower one another to stand strong and speak out," she said.
The campaign focuses on addressing and preventing physical, emotional, and psychological abuse, recognising the profound impact it has on individuals and communities.
The Prevention of Gender-based Violence Campaign is also powered by Unite BVI, WINBVI, along with other dedicated non-profit organizations within the community.
Meanwhile, WINBVI Organization President, Alicia Green said, "Our mission is to provide education, resources, and support, and ultimately to empower individuals to recognize and prevent all forms of abuse—physical, emotional, and psychological. This collaborative effort reflects our deep commitment to creating a safer, more inclusive society. We believe that through unity and collective action, we can make a significant impact and foster a culture of respect and safety for all."
Campaign Goals
The primary objectives of the prevention of Gender-Based Violence Campaign are to raise awareness about the prevalence and forms of gender-based violence, educate the public on the signs of physical, emotional, and psychological abuse, provide practical tools and resources for prevention and self-defense and foster a supportive community network for victims and survivors.
Women Empowerment Self-Defense Class
The campaign began on July 27, 2024, with discussions on radio and other media platforms. These will end on August 2, 2024.
A Women Empowerment Self-defense class will be held on Saturday, August 17, 2024, from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the Boynes Taekwondo Academy located in Kingston (next to Cedar School).
The class aims to equip women with basic self-defence skills that enhance personal confidence and could potentially save their lives or the lives of their loved ones. A self-defence class for males will also be held in early September.
Community discussion and forums will also be open to the public where their voices can be heard and concerns addressed. Legal framework will also be reviewed and revised to enhance its regime for domestic violence victims.
