Mr Grim yields to COVID-19! Tortola Torture postponed
The postponement comes in response to the Government of the Virgin Islands announcing, last night, March 17, 2020, far reaching plans, including closing the border to non-residents and no gatherings over 30 people for the next 30 days, to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 in the VI.
The organisors said they are looking for a suitable new date in the latter part of the year, but said while the situation is changing so quickly, they don't want to fix a new date which may have to change again.
“These are extraordinary times. We will send regular updates until there is more certainty. All entries will automatically roll over into the new date. We understand that this will be disappointing for you all, as it is for us. We will try to make sure that the new date is announced far enough out to allow you to plan, and train, for it.”
‘We have to stop the spread’
The Tortola Torture organisors also said there may be some local competitors who feel a slimmed down locals-only event as possible; however, “as much as we like to be rebels, this would not be sensible in the face of such a public health crisis on a small island with limited medical facilities. We have to stop the spread.”
One of the big names that had already registered for Tortoa Torture 2020 was globe-trotting American trail runner David Kilgore, 27, who finished 3rd at the 2018 USATF 50 km Trail Championships, 4th at the 2019 USATF 50 km Trail Championships and won the 2018 Breakneck Point 42K.
