Mother asks court for leniency to take son back home
The mother explained to the court that the defendant, who was born in Tortola, lived with her in Antigua and returned to the Virgin Islands at the age of 17.
She told the court that her son was not one to get in trouble while in Antigua, but has been in and out of prison since he moved back to Tortola.
She added that she suspects his behavior to be a result of the bad company he affiliates with here in Tortola.
In tears, the defendant’s mother told the court that he is her only child, and wishes to take him back home with her, where he will hopefully stay out of trouble.
“To see that he is going in and out of prison in Tortola, I just want to take him home.”
Mr. Tyson who pleaded not guilty on a previous court date, appeared for his charges to be read against him a second time; he pleaded guilty to both charges.
Allegedly, on May 8, 2012, while police were on patrol in the vicinity of Wickhams Cay, the defendant started to shout something while the officers drew near to where he was (sitting on the metal railing at Bobby’s Supermarket).
Crown Counsel Leslie-Ann Faulkner told the court that police allegedly asked the defendant what he said, at which time he then replied with a profanity rhyming with “truck blue”, while pointing his finger in the officer’s face.
The court also understands that while officers attempted to arrest the defendant, he pulled away his hand and ran away.
Mr. Tyson who is 23 year old, in mitigation, apologized to the court and added that his life is on pause and he wants to get the case over with to get his life in order.
Prior to this case, Mr. Tyson served a sentence of 8 months in Her Majesty’s Prison for wounding. He came out of prison on March 16, 2012.
The maximum penalty for this case, according to the court is a $500 fine or 6 months in prison.
His case is adjourned until August 31, 2012.
