ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Junior Minister for Culture and Tourism Hon Luce D. Hodge-Smith (R4) has said more focus needs to be placed on tourism in the Virgin Islands (VI).

Hon Hodge-Smith was speaking during a post budget interview with government information officers.

Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley presented the national budget on Monday, November 11, 2024, in the amount of four hundred and eighty-eight million, six hundred and ninety-nine thousand, eight hundred and seventy-one dollars ($488,699,871.00).

There’s a threat with Financial Services- Hon Hodge-Smith

Hon Hodge-Smith said tourism and the Financial Services Sector has been driving the Territory’s economy for decades however, there is a threat with the Financial Services Sector.

“We brought quite a bit of bills to the House of Assembly that needed to be urgently passed in order to safeguard our Financial Services Sector. So, there’s a threat with the Financial Services Sector so we have to focus a lot more on our tourism

Tourism she added does not only include sun, sea and sand but the VI’s culture and history

So that’s where culture and tourism comes in and to help sustain our tourism sector. We have to diversify it, we have to attract different types of visitors

Tourism Plan coming

Meanwhile the Junior Minister revealed the promised Tourism Plan for the VI will be coming soon.

“I know it was promised this year but we’re definitely going to be working on it as soon as possible. We already have connections with the Caribbean Tourism Organisation so we that we can start to plan to bring forward our tourism plan,” Hon Hodge-Smith said.

She added that everybody in the tourism industry as well as those who are interested will have an input in the Territory’s tourism plan before moving forward.

“We need to sustain ourselves, we need to of course enhance our products,” she stated.

The place is in need of fixing for more tourist to come and visit. It's not nice for people coming for the first time and not even seeing local arts on the wall, no proper statues in memory of locals and the list can go on.

Hon. Junior Minister, Luce D. Hodge-Smith, your are right that more more focus needed to be place on tourism, but running down infrastructure and badly ragged potholes traffic roads urgent repair BVI wide. In addition to those three ares of interest our political Leaders need to abruptly stop willfully and wastefully mismanaging our meager finances on unnecessary, needless, and random pleasure trips and profitless Music Festivities and hand-picks handouts.

I don't nor should anyone expect "Good Governance for the people of the British Virgin Islands, but much better is within hand reach, if our political Leaders and many others would first curb their craving, lustful, greedy mindset.

It is not ethnical diversities that have us stiffled, it is the majority of the people extreme greedy mindset, religious leaders and some low earners, too.

God loves everyone, but he can't tolerate living nor lifeless idols.

Righteousness exults a Nation, but sin is a reproach to any (people's best interest) people.

Neither she or Dawson (Rep. for D1) is built for politics. So don’t expect them to perform. They allowed their loyalty to the party to turn them into politicians; hence setting them up for failure. They are both very articulate and good at public speaking and I dare say that nobody can dispute that.

Dr. Dawson is under-utilized given his skillsets. That man should be the Minister of Education.

The main pillar of the country "tourism" should be the focus of all elected represented. Apart from the roads, the airport expansion is and should be a priority, all these down islands, as we call them are are improving by leaps and bounds to market and attract their clients. We can do much better. Too much unnecessary debate, destructive criticism and blame game and get cost for our hard earned money. We need direct flights from New York.

We should know by now if you don't have a wallet you have to beg for things and are at the discretion of the ones who do (ministers/Premier}. Money has to be distributed or generated. District Council will enable the district to generate revenue. With additional revenue, districts can create their own tourism packages and events. The best way to create extra revenue is if the district makes its own. The district will need a district council to oversee its representative.

Did the Hon Premier Natalio Wheatley , R-, MoF + just delivered the fiscal year 2025 Budget Speech? Was the budget not discussed in Cabinet? If so why did the Hon Luce Hodge Smith race out the chamber from the speech to rant about not having enough money for Tourism. You ranting about tourism not having enough funding but where is the tourism plan you promised? Should the HoA just throw money at tourism? Common on cuz.

Yes, tourism and financial services are the twin pillars of the VI economy. Financial services provides approximately 60% of government revenue. Nevertheless, tourism provides more directly, indirect and induced employment. Undoubtedly, if financial services take a major hit, service delivery will also take a major hit , so financial services needs to be shored up.,Nonetheless, tourism needs to deepen, strengthen , etc.. The economy needs to diversified. The blue economy needed to be fueled and ramped up. We an economy that if one sector stumbles the whole enchilada does not tumble. What is the probability of one-half of the economic twin pillars stumbling?

CTO cannot help us. Looks like you just learned of that waste of time organization so you now throwing the name around like it means something. The Tourism plan is an internal strategy that must be created and developed locally from within the tourist industry and relevant government departments.

There goes another one with no ideas, when they should be pushing entrepreneurship of native BVI people, they looking for white monopoly capital domination in foreigners bringing hotels to give menial jobs, just as you all give these small cays to Richard Branson, give them to local with government funding to start business and generate tax.

If you are a keen observer you will recognize that.
Has it occured to you and others who are bashing Luce Hodge-Smith that she inherited a muddy, dirty and run down place? The district has been that way for 49 + years. I know this and you know this. Has it occured to you that the run down eyesore properties in Road Town belongs to private people who don't take care of their properties? You can extend that to the rest of the $%# virgin islands. Problem is we want things fix now. Fix immediately. Fix without planning, fix without money or even voluntary contributions and we the people are some of the biggest problems. We must be keen to pay attention to the role some of us play in creating some of the said problems. That garbage strewn all over didn't happen by osmosis. You think Luce Hodge- Smith decided one day to dump garbage, sewerage, vice, gambling, prostitution, slop and other mess in Road Town,Road Town? In the next few days chip in with helping to clean up Da City. Looking forward to seeing you.

RT was a lil cleaner when Mark was this in charge, but even he too started to fail us. I don’t understand why district reps always ask for less money than they need to run the district, only to cry at the end that they don’t have enough money. Why can’t district members come together and pool resources to raise some of the funds they need?
