Morals of VI Youths eroding drastically – Stakeholders
“It’s the molestation of a young lady, the molestation of a young man, the young man/young woman who has a low self esteem, the young person who lives in a single parent home, the sexually active young men and women that does not realize these decisions that can change their lives forever,” Lake said, speaking at a recent event hosted by the Rotary Club of Road Town, where that club had announced a partnership between itself and two organisations – Follow The Movement and the Hope Foundation.
Those are some of the issues that groups like FTM and Hope Foundation are said to be diligently working towards changing in the Virgin Islands today and with their newfound partnership with the Rotary Club of Road Town led by Mr Shan Mohamed as incoming president, they are said to be in a position to be able to make greater in-roads.
The aforementioned sparked several revelations at the signing ceremony on July 10, 2014 at Maria’s By the Sea, to the extent that the Minister for Education and Culture Hon Myron V. Walwyn very emotionally pleaded for more help for the Territory’s youths as he revealed the startling figure of some twelve girls being pregnant in the Elmore Stoutt High School for the last academic year alone. He said that it is something that is becoming a major issue.
“Teenage pregnancy is becoming a major problem in this country, (but) we don’t like to talk about it. In the high school, there were 12 pregnant ladies in the high school this academic year,” said the Education Minister.
Our sources in the Elmore Stoutt High School had brought this issue, which was being investigated, to our attention. Based on our investigations the figure was in fact fourteen young ladies as was reported at one of the school’s teachers’ meeting prior to the close of the school year.
It was the expressed opinion that more focus is being placed on addressing issues affecting men as opposed to those of women. “Somebody needs to help and work along with the government, because the government cannot fix everything,” appealed Hon Walwyn.
President of the Hope Foundation Melvin 'Mitch' Turnbull touched on one of the striking realities of the challenged youths of today’s society and noted that in tackling the problems it must be respected that they do not need hand-outs and pity but rather they need strategized comprehensive help.
It is the opinion of many as expressed at various forums, events and on the streets that the moral fabric among youths in the Virgin Islands has been lost.

"If everyone is moving fwd together; then success takes care of itself!"
Funny...the topic is about our young ppl falling along the way side & the focus is on trash. No he may not be the most educated person out there hell many of us never finished school & some who themselves graduated can't even put a simple sentence together. The issue at hand is how do we help our ppl?
Those 12 girls who found themselves pregnant exactly how did that transpire? Mothers, do you keep on a check on your daughters? Do you take them to the doctor for regular check ups? If you do & in the event u find that she's not a virgin do you make the decision to put her on BC to avoid her bringing more stress on both hers & your life or just leave it alone & convince yourself she won't get pregnant? When I found out my daughter wasn't a virgin at the age of 15 the doc didn't have to tell me twice. I made the decision then & there put her straight on BC. I'm not running the risk of having my teen bring home a child for who to mind? surely NOT ME!! No way am I taking on that responsibility, you must be mad & I ring it in her head ever so often. You want to play woman well you will take on womanly responsibilities
