BAUGHERS BAY, Tortola, VI- After being unsuccessful at getting on the Virgin Islands Party (VIP) slate as an At Large Candidate, Mrs Mitsy J. Ellis-Simpson has opted to run as an Independent Territorial At-Large Candidate.

Mrs Ellis-Simpson, who was defeated by then VIP Vice-President Zoe J. Walcott, 42 votes to 15, at the VIP Congress, recently launched her own candidacy, which she confirmed during an interview on the show Talking Points, which was live-streamed on Facebook on March 27, 2023.

Asked whether she was planning to start her own Party, Mrs Ellis-Simpson responded in the negative, stating rather that she is running strictly as an Independent candidate.

She went on to detail her experience she said propelled her to run in this capacity.

I’ve seen the challenges within the country’- Ellis-Simpson

“I actually went through a process with another Party, the Virgin Islands Party, in going through their nomination process. And having completed that process and assessing everything that transpired, I thought it was necessary for me to come to the people and give them an opportunity to choose from a pool of candidates, not just Party candidates, but also independent candidates at this time,” Ellis-Simpson noted.

Asked what she is bringing to the table and why voters should consider her, Mrs Ellis-Simpson pointed to her economic history book, The Secret Code, which was published in 2016.

“I’ve seen the challenges within the country. I look at various aspects of different industries and I went through a process of research- documenting, just to have a greater understanding of the country overall. So this is not just somebody who just get up yesterday and say, ‘Hey, I want to run for election. It has been a process for me,” Mrs Ellis-Simpson declared.

She said she was also inspired by looking at challenges on the ground following Hurricane Irma.

I really do believe that I do have some skillsets

Ellis-Simpson had also sought to contest with the VIP in 2019.

“I did try to run as well back in 2019, but I decided to throw my support after I didn’t get through with that process behind that Party system, but I think at this present time it's really important. I really do believe that I do have some skillsets and some ability that the country needs at this time, to push the country forward,” Mrs Ellis-Simpson said.

She pointed out that the key platforms she will be addressing are violence and crime and the overhauling of the social protection system.

Mrs Ellis-Simpson is a businesswoman and economist who has worked in the financial services and real estate industries for some time.

Like it or not the party system is an integral part of the political process for both the Westminster and presidential systems. Individual have the choice of aligning or caucusing with a party or running as an independent based on their popularity and strengths. The weakness of an independent candidate is getting things done bringing home the bacon without the fullthroated support of the party in power. Some independent candidates have had success at the polls but invariably caucus with a party after the election. Further, in a hung-election or hung parliament, the winning independent candidate(s) have some negotiating leverage in forming a government. Still in BVI politics running as an independent is a longshot. But the choice is up to voters. At the end of the day, voters want positive outcomes . So the question is can outcomes best be delivered through the party system or as an independent? Sometimes, independent candidates can be spoilers, hurting the party they are likely to caucus with if they had won. Loyalty up and down ladder is still a valuable commodity in politics.

If you cant get a party to support your views, how are you going to get the voters to support you.

I have observed this young lady over the last few years. She is committed and wants to see the best for the BVI. Her economic history book demonstrates that she is not fly by night - that took a lot of effort. I have also seen her work in communities. We need more people like her coming forward. She has my vote all the way!

Mitsy like most of the other candidates are talking in too much generalities in what are their plans to move the country forward. What are needed is specific plans programmes, processes, projects, etc to reset the compass to set the BVI on a new path, course. Economic theory is one thing but executing a specific plan is another tory. The BVI is in crisis and is in an existential battle to control the crisis. Lots of people seem to know whai is wrong and are saying good things, are professed problem solvers but what is severely lacking is the mechanics, the architecture, etc for solving the problems. The electorate need to hear than more what is wrong. They need the fix (project)the cost, source of funding, impact on other projects, completion timeline, etc. The BVI is on serious trouble and not the time for OJT( on the job training. We need experienced, seasoned veterans.

She has good analytical skills and can get things done. All we have been seeing is pure talk and no implementation. I think she will get things done. She has the vote of all my household because that is what we need. We need somebody who can implement!

I think her home country could use her help. She should probably spend some time analyzing her home country and run there. They certainly need help.

    Thanks!
