Miss BVI 2012, first for jewellery tradition
Ms. deCastro, who now advertises a pair of ‘Mikimoto’ earrings and necklace valuing $3500, is the First Queen to the tradition.
The jewellery was presented to the recently crowned Miss BVI 2012, during a formal ceremony at the Little Switzerland store location in Road Town, yesterday August 16, 2012.
According to the Manager of Little Switzerland, Josiah Russel, the ‘heirloom’ piece is a symbol of success, hope and beginnings that Ms. deCastro and other future queens can wear while attending events and other beauty shows, representing the Virgin Islands.
Meanwhile, Representative of the Tourist Board, Kevis Hughes said with Little Switzerland being a VIP business partner with the BVI Tourist Board, they saw no better way than to present such a gift to current and future Miss BVIs. “This is something of significance that we have been working on and now is one of the best times.”
He added that going forward the Tourist Board will decide whether the pieces would be given to future queens on the night of their crowning or in another formal ceremony. “We’ll figure it out or discuss it moving forward, with other committees to come.”
He said, with no promises, that “hopefully for 60th [Festival Anniversary] the will amp it [jewellery] up.”
Ms. deCastro, who was crowned Miss BVI 2012 on August 5, 2012 said she appreciated the gesture and is thankful that the tradition was implemented in her year and that she is the first to wear the Heirloom pieces.
