ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Pastor and host of the Honestly Speaking radio show Claude O. Skelton-Cline has called on the region to give standing ovations to Barbados Prime Minister Mia A. Mottley over her leadership that saw the removal of Queen Elizabeth II as Head of State and the transition of Barbados to a republic.

Skelton-Cline was at the time speaking on the Tuesday, December 7, 2021, edition of his Honestly Speaking show on ZBVI 780am.

“You can say whatever you want about Prime Minister Mottley, but she as a strong, articulate, thoughtful, provocative woman of color and Caribbean… Just need a standing ovation for the leadership she is rendering to what is now the Republic of Barbados,” he said.

On  November 30, 2021, Barbados became a Republic after Dame Sandra P. Mason was sworn in as President, thus moving the country from a parliamentary constitutional monarchy under the hereditary monarch of Barbados (Queen Elizabeth II) to a parliamentary republic with a ceremonial indirectly elected president as Head of State.

'It was time' - Mia Mottley

In an interview with the BBC, Prime Minister Motley described the new path as a chance for the island to assert itself and show greater self-confidence. "It was time," she said, "to fully leave our colonial past behind."

Mottley said dismantling aspects of a colonial legacy were not "antagonistic or adversarial," while speaking of her respect for the Queen but said the time had come for a new kind of relationship with the United Kingdom where the two countries would remain close partners.

Skelton-Cline said the Virgin Islands wants to applaud and help celebrate what is a milestone for Barbados that started since their independence in 1966, however, he reminded that the VI also needs to take steps towards greater autonomy from the UK, which will first begin with a constitutional review due since 2017.

Today 2023 Sadly the little boys and girls on this island will forever be Colonial slaves to England. The adults haven't the⚽️⚽️ to do what our neighbors Barbados did. Today Barbados economy and tourism are booming %6.5 growth. 15 large aircraft at Barbados international airport 4 days ago. VI now singing god save the king. Barbados has embraced Africa and not China. Mia mottley is now a world leader not just a Caribbean leader. The adults are not in VI rooms only crying children. Barbados now loved by all. VI still singing independent sounds with a British Flag.????????

Barbados was independent since 1966. The Queen was indeed the formal sovereign of the country just as it is still being the sovereign of Australia or New Zealand. In all of this cases the power of the queen and the governors was/is pure symbolic. Would you say that Australia is still a part of a colonialist relationship? I wouldn't.
What Barbados did was purely to get rid of a symbol. Barbados was in fact independent long before formally becoming republic. Barbados is even a member of UN.
CSK presents the last step taken by this country as a result of a kind of a liberation war when in fact was the decision of an already independent nation.
Some ppl are so stuck in the past that they don't miss any opportunity to try keep on life support demons of the same past that are about to die.
Good luck to Barbados and its people!

She is popularly recognized as the best leader in the world...Her first legislation to parliament is "Protection for street vendors and mom and pop shops". No One interfere with them. She went on to explain "Lots of us get too, too educated and too pampus and forget where we came from and who made us who we are, it's our parents and grand parents standing all day on the side of the selling to put food on the table, but how soon we forget, how ungrateful we have become.".
