ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The issue of mentally ill persons roaming the streets of the [British] Virgin Islands has come to the forefront, following an incident on March 23, 2022, when a female tourist was assaulted by a mentally ill woman on Waterfront Drive.

In the incident caught on camera, the well-known mentally ill woman could be heard saying something to a male and a female as they walked past her.

Just as the individuals passed the mentally ill woman, she came from behind and yanked the hair of the female.

The upset male person accompanying the woman then walked up to the mentally ill woman yelling “What happened? What happened?” before walking away.

The woman caused less damage to the BVI reputation that the recent actions of customs - especially the foolish junior enforcement officer who was quoted!

The tourists who were involved with the moorings situation could give a bad report. And we don't know how that could play out for the moorings.

I think it would have been better if customs had waited until after the charters were finished. Then Moorings clients would not have known anything. And it would have protected mooring reputation.

This is another sad case in the BVI. Here is a case where substance abuse is creating complicated disorders with many consequences the victims of the drug dealers.
Most youths are introduced to crack cocaine so pushers can build their house or live their fancy lifestyles destroying the lives of so many families. They make it their duty to go after these people after they return from rehab, point blank they just don’t care!
These same persons have no regards to the suffering from this disorder and it further extends to family and the community.
Don’t worry Karma is a b!#cH and it will fall back on their children in one way or the other.

Wait! The VI Consortium showed the video of this yesterday showing the woman pulling the tourist hair, with the male tourist confronting her, stating it was in St. Thomas. Now our news showing this today says it is in Tortola???? Which place of occurrence is correct?

Government will wait for someone to get killed by one of these nu+case before something is done. The one guy slapped off a woman and threw rocks at people and he's allowed to walk the streets

How is Government responsible for these crazy people again? All of them have relatives right here in the BVI who does nothing to help them. Talking nonsense about lawsuit. These crazy people does not belong to Government

I agree with you on this they all have families that don't look out for them because of their state of mind but i bet if someone connect them some licks when they mess with the wrong person that's the time you know who them related to because they will want someone to blame. Its a crying shame why there are so many of Mental Persons freely roaming the streets. What the Government can do is to try to find a housing where they can be kept and monitored away from the public where they are constantly being a pest to society.

IT'S HASANYA AKA NADIA, IT'S VERY SAD TO SEE WHAT SHE HAVE BECOME, DRUGS IS REALLY A BAD THING. NADIA USED TO LOOK SO GOOD THAT I USED ENVY LOOKING AT HER. SHE REALLY NEEDS HELP, A REHAB CENTER SOMETHING, PUTTING HER IN THE HOSPITAL FOR A WEEK IS NOT ENOUGH CAUSE WHEN SHE GO BACK ON THE STREET IT'S JUST GOING TO BE A REPEAT. BVI NEEDS TO INVEST A REHAB FACILITY, CAUSE THE YOUNG PEOPLE START SMOKING FROM YOUNG AND IT'S MESSED UP.

Mental illness is a big problem..mental illness is this is that. DRUG ADDICTION is what it is these so called mentally ill persons are drug addicts. These are good people who have been caught in the web of drug addiction. Some have managed to escape and regained their self respect while others keep sliding further down a dark and slippery hole. The question of The National Drug Advisory Council came up on radio this morning. This group has been non functional for years. They were of the opinion that they were wasting their time having meetings and making recommendations which were simply being ignored and no one in the government showed any real interest in this subject. The issue has become critical now lets see how it is dealt with. The same lady in question broke the glass door to Mellow Moods Restaurant recently. She was taken to the police station. When I asked her what was the outcome she said " dem say I have to fix it back." Which addict will give up their drug money to do anything else. BVI is one big comedy corner. The people are lost in darkness and proud to show that they don't know that they don't know.

Drug addiction and mental illness often go hand in hand with one exacerbating the other. The NDAC wasn't just "a group" - it was a government agency, operating under the Ministry of Health, which was definitely underfunded and largely ignored. It hasn't been functional for almost two decades. We rather spend the money on the prison and on being reactive rather than proactive.

Mentally ill my foot. All BVislanders do is depend on Government for everything. I want all those families that are not taking care or even attempting to take care of their own that there is something called self defense.

Understand that and not because someone is mentally ill or challenge people are going to stay there and allow all you so called mentally ill family to injure them.

Look at Suzy in Long Look. Been on drugs for an eternity, walking up and down with no shoes and begging people for money daily. She has a big family who has tried, but she gets away and goes looking for her drugs all of the time. Where are they supposed to keep her especially if they have to go to work every day? She's pitiful but not violent.

If they suffer drug addiction, that is very different that mental illness. With this country's budget, there should be a PROPPER, drug rehabilitation and mental illness facilities. There is money spent on things of less importance. Mental illness is treatable but drug addition is rooted way deeper and individuals need to be compelled to stop. Is really sad.
