Mentally ill man reportedly attacks & injures elderly woman

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- A landlord on Tortola is calling on the government to intervene after a young man suspected of severe mental illness allegedly attacked two of her tenants, leaving a senior citizen hospitalised with stitches, but remains free in the community despite reports of prior assaults.

Elderly woman hospitalised

In a social media post on September 9, 2026, Maris Hodge-Wright reported that the incident occurred two weeks ago as her tenants, a senior woman and her younger roommate, waited outside their rental home for a church bus to take them to an evening service.

Hodge-Wright said the young man approached from behind the house, mumbled something, then struck the elderly woman in the back with a "hard object" he was carrying in a bag, knocking her to the ground and causing facial injuries that required hospital treatment and stitches.

The landlord continued that the mentally ill man then turned toward the younger woman in an apparent attempt to attack her as well, but she managed to escape and call the police.

The suspect subsequently fled the scene and was not arrested.

Both women, according to Hodge-Wright, now report symptoms consistent with post‑traumatic stress, including hypervigilance and nightmares, and say they feel unsafe living alone at the property where the attacker approached from the rear of the house.

Landlord: ‘This was not his first attack’

The landlord said she has been told this was not the man’s first violent incident, alleging that one prior attack targeted a young mother carrying her child.

Hodge-Wright also pointed to a separate, long‑standing problem in Road Town, where members of the Road Town Methodist Church say they have been “terrorised for years” by another young man known to attack people—including, she says, her own grandson.

In a strongly worded appeal on Facebook, the landlord argued that both the alleged attacker and his victims are failed by a system that does not provide safe housing and treatment for people with severe mental illness, while also failing to deliver justice and protection to those who are harmed.

“For a country that is by no means poor, and having one of the best economies in the Caribbean, we can do better; we must do better for those individuals who cannot help themselves and put our communities at risk,” she said.

Hodge-Wright is urging politicians gearing up for the next election to publicly outline plans to address the needs of severely mentally disturbed individuals and to improve community safety.

“Please do something before someone is severely hurt or killed.”

Hodge-Wright's message to decision‑makers is direct and addresses the intersection of mental health care, public safety, and justice so that vulnerable residents are neither left to deteriorate on the streets nor allowed to endanger others without intervention.

If you have nothing good to say, say nothing at all. I feel for the victims, but he himself is a victim of the system. If you were in that mental capacity, or your child, would you want someone to respond in this manner?

Yes, the police may have dropped the ball, but where is the young man's family? I have seen him down outside Riteway at Road Reef, and you can see that he is sick. But if these people do crime and there is no mental institution, send them to prison. A lot of them up there are sick also, but nevertheless are doing time.

I dont know him like that but I know that many of those troubled folks use drugs as self medication. It's not the cause of their issues. It doesnt help but that's their intention and they think it helps better than the medication that keeps them barely conscious and tranquil. There are many mentally ill ppl in the world and we really only care when they can't function in society while the functioning cray ppl run the govt and have great social influence lol

@ Comment. That is because they value tourists more than the people who live here. If this nut attacks a tourist, watch all kinds of police power go after him. SHAME they won't do the same for us.

I was walking down the old Main Street from little Denmark to Khoys mailing services when an obviously disturbed male of light skin, mumbling in Spanish doing aggressive hand movements, I moved to the other side of the road to avoid confrontation but he followed me and struck out with his hands. I pushed him back and shouted to back off, he did.If this had been a young or older person or woman he could have done some damage to them. He needs help.I ve seen him often causing problems but the police turn a blind eye like the dangerous scooter riders.

    Sad part is
If you attack him you will be on the receiving end of the law

Police can't do nothing about them but carry them hospital while you foot the bill for your injuries.

All I know I will gladly go jail after I mess him up

Mental people know who to mess with
Once you show you not putting up with their crap they know not to mess with you

I wish I was around when he attacked them woman . I was busting he 2 hard clout. That would of been his medicine

How come he don't run up on the known criminals, drug man, deadbeat dads, woman beaters, or unruly kids?

Only the innocent hardworking and helpless getting blows

Evil seems to proposer in this nature's little secret

it's all good and well to speak to these ills of the community, but not one word about the drug peddlers who are selling drugs up and down the town and in our schools. This is usually the end result. Not saying that this is the particular case here, but parents, please talk to your children early and fathers be involved in the lives of your children. Many are crying out for help long before they get to this stage. Too many broken homes, single parents and neglect of the children.

He walks around town all day every day in a loop during work hours. He is NOT hard to find. If the authorities/mental health services etc. want to find him they can easily do so. He is a danger to the community and especially to young girls and women.

When one of those crazy people turn loose and go bulistic on one of these politicians or one of their family members then someone will do something about it and take mental illness serious in the BVI. Don’t think because you are in high places you are immune from the wrath of a mentally unstable person.

To make eye contact with the mental unstable people on the street but I still keep my eye on them in the event they attack or try to hurt me. Those people develop some type of extra strength and they can kill or hurt someone real bad. When I was living in NYC, down in the subway a mental ill man push a lady to her death in front of a moving train entering the station, he said the coat she was wearing was red and the color red trigger him off. It is also said that the color blue will trigger a mental ill person. Something about blue that trigger them.

something has to be done, not just stating it or commenting. we cannot live in an environment where our women and children don't feel safe because we have mentally ill roaming around causing issues. we cannot and will not feel comfort in the fact that something worse has not happened. its just a matter of time until something much more serious happens.

if something isn't done about this.... it will simply continue to be another problem along with all others here in the BVI.

if simple problems cannot be solved then that says allot about the capacity and resilience that the BVI has to resolve problems in general.

BVI Strong ? and still in this 2026 and counting, we have mentally ill / crazy people doing whatever they want and nothing being done about it.
