ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The BVI Red Cross Men’s Health Fair and Prostate Cancer Screening, in partnership with Nagico Insurances, returns on March 27, 2021, on Virgin Gorda, and April 9 and 10, 2021 on Tortola.

Men paying ‘closer attention’ to health- Lloyd

Director of the BVI Red Cross Ms Stacy C. Lloyd in a press release on March 9, 2021, said: “What started due to the concern of the growing cases of prostate cancer in men in the Territory has now continued for over 20 years and has morphed into a full health fair. Essentially it’s a clinic for men.”

“To date, the BVI Red Cross has screened over 8000 men. The number of men who visit the fair has declined which is a great thing because it’s accomplishing what our former Director Edris O’Neal wanted, for men to start paying closer attention to their health and to visit their health care practitioners regularly.”

The fair takes place on Virgin Gorda on Saturday, March 27, 2021, at the Catholic Community Centre; and on Tortola on Friday, April 9, 2021, and Saturday, April 10, 2021, at Cedar International School.

This year, participants can expect glucose testing, prostate screenings, general health checks, in addition to presentations on chronic disease, Alzheimer’s Disease, nutrition and exercise demonstrations.

For more information, persons can contact the BVI Red Cross at 494-6349 and follow @bviredcross on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter for updates on activities.

The BVI Red Cross said its mission is to mobilise the power of humanity so that individuals and communities have the capacity to prepare for, deal with and recover from crisis.

The BVI Red Cross was established in 1956. The Red Cross Movement is a volunteer-based international humanitarian organisation.

The test for prostate cancer is a PSA test that is made from a blood sample.

Prostate cancer is more common in black men. About one in five will get it. But it’s very curable and survivable if caught early. There are no real symptoms until it might be too late. A simple blood test is all that is needed to identify if you have it. Catch it early before it spreads and it can usually be cured by a painless radiation procedure and hormones. If you don’t catch it early or ignore symptoms like peeing too much it can spread. Once it spreads your chances are much much lower. I know, I had it.

      Get tested.
